A paranoid Marjorie Taylor Greene says she wants the U.S. government to shut down

Well, in her defense, she probably doesn’t know that, either - she’s only in congress because she thinks she’s a really important person who people should pay attention to; the actual legislating bit isn’t of interest. [My personal running joke is to say, “in their defense” about someone terrible and follow it up with something that is not, in any way, a defense.]

Some historians tend to be unwilling to accurately describe current events/people accurately because doing so would cause offense and get them into trouble, so…

There is literally nothing I can lose by telling the truth, so…

Absolutely understandable. As a lefty tree-hugger Alabama boy, I totally get “raided in the south”.

Now I want a martini. With a blue cheese olive - but our current stash is jalapeno/garlic. BTW, if you ever see this gin when out and about, it makes a great drink:

I love a good double Tanqueray and Schweppes tonic water. Another favorite is a shot each of chilled Tanqueray and Tia Maria shaken vigorously. Tastes like more!

I read the lede aloud at the kitchen table and my spouse said, “Who cares what she thinks.” I definitely married well.

Hmm… Going to Total Wines today and they have it in stock. As for blue cheese stuffed olives try to find them in olive oil. Most of the jarred stuff in in brine. Not bad but… I get mine at Publix or Winn Dixie, with the Publix ones a bit better.

It’s happened several times in the last few decades

Some things stop, other things keep going

Each time is a slightly more routine and unremarkable preview of what will happen if and when Congress stops functioning at all

Every “government shutdown” is a rehearsal for dictatorship

That was one freaking great comic book. Just great.

Maybe she should go plant some more pipe bombs about it…

I would love to be able to not care what she thinks, but unfortunately she remains a member of Congress. Until such time as she’s taken away in handcuffs for setting literal fires in the hallways of Congress, we’re stuck with her. (And you pay attention to her for the same reason you’d watch the lunatic with a shotgun; even if they’re not waving it around right now, you want at least some warning before they start randomly blasting things.)

It seems like she’s thinking of something more permanent than the usual temporary government shutdown, too. I.e. she’s fantasizing about the federal government just disappearing. Like many Republican politicians, she clearly has no idea what the federal government actually does, but I suspect she’s also not paid any attention to previous shutdowns, much less what kind of impacts they had.

I assume this was in reply to my comment above. Thanks for the olive recommendation. Although we don’t have Winn Dixie or Publix in CA.
I’m sure I can find some at Vons or BevMo or Total Wine. We just got one of the latter here in San Diego. The only time I’ve been in one was when we were visiting friends in PHX. Cool store.

I think she does, and believes it’s illegitimate, like many authoritarians. Just the fact that rights are extended to non-whites is enough for her to believe that the government is illegitimate.

Since she has no committees, it seems she spends her time contradicting everything the Dems are trying to get done. At least her lawsuit against Nancy Pelosi was thrown out. She was suing because of all the fines for not wearing a mask. Here’s a thought: Follow the rules, Margie.

I think she believes it’s illegitimate and she has no idea what it does. Even by Republican party standards she’s appallingly dumb and ignorant, and a reoccurring theme with Republican congressmen is that, even with the “serious” ones who have been in office for years, they clearly have no idea what, outside what they immediately are engaged with, the federal government does. E.g. Rick Perry wanting to eliminate multiple federal agencies including the Department of Energy, and then being absolutely shocked to discover what it is they do, something he only found out after being put in charge of it (and realizing that, actually, no, the federal government did need to be the one to do that work). He clearly didn’t know any more about the other departments.

They seem completely clueless about the kinds of research and coordination the federal government does for the benefit of agriculture and industry (that they would be absolutely screwed without), for example.
