A Roundup Of Antisemitism: Resisting The Socialism Of Fools

If anything that thread is getting worse

I just donā€™t get it. History of religious practices? Awesome! Comparative studies? Even better! Explanation of rituals and meanings (Purim was always a mystery to me), heck yeah! Light humor and puns? Well, I take it upon myself to be judged for that.

Insults about deeply held beliefs? I will start insulting abrahamic religions the same day I start desecrating First Nation sites. As in, never.

(Puns donā€™t count)

Its not even new or even recent. Almost 2,000 years ago, the rabbis of the Talmud wrote:

With regard to a potential convert who comes to a court in order to convert, at the present time, when the Jews are in exile, the judges of the court say to him: What did you see that motivated you to come to convert? Donā€™t you know that the Jewish people at the present time are anguished, suppressed, despised, and harassed, and hardships are frequently visited upon them?

(Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Yevamot, page 47a, sourced from sefaria.org)

What was true ā€œat the present timeā€ then? Just as true now.

I am a decently smart fella, and I know a lot of the history of antisemitism, but chalk this up to something I can memorize but never understand why.

Weā€™re the perpetual outsiders, and thus the perfect scapegoats. We donā€™t assimilate, and that frightens people who demand cultural conformity, which, letā€™s be honest, is a mainstay of Christian cultural heritage. And while weā€™re not ā€œsmarterā€, we do tend to be better educated on the average, which triggers a whole different set of biases.

Plus thereā€™s a few thousand years of anti-Jewish propaganda floating out there in the zeitgeist that takes multiple formsā€“like, for example, how Rowlingā€™s Gringotts goblins are one giant negative Jewish stereotype, practically to the level of caricature. Did she do that intentionally? No. But the associations are out there and baked into the cultural backgroundā€“i.e. unpleasant and greedy non-humans with hooked noses who are obsessed with money. And, of course, it feeds back into itself, thanks to successful fiction like the HP series.

Yeah. Iā€™m really finding that there are people on this forum that I canā€™t trust anymore.

Think about that, not only did she not notice herself but her editors and publishers didnt notice either. Or maybe they noticed but just didnt care.

An unfortunate number of regulars and not the ones I already expect it from.

I am not arguing with you, these are the thoughts that immediately come to mind when encountering a person that holds the very true biases you list. Whenever I use the word ā€œyouā€ I am not referring to bibliophile, but the person with the bias.

(We will call this shadowboxing)

Perpetual outsiders? Have you ever even been outside!? Letā€™s take a quick jaunt to China Town.

Assimilate? Are you suggesting that Jewish culture assimilate? Then where the carp am I gonna find a good deli!?

Better educated? You mean a multi thousand year old culture who maintains that education and study are a core tenet, and you are surprised by this?

Obsessed with money!? Are you carping kidding me!? When was the last time someone with either Jewish culture, heritage, or religious beliefs ever came up to you and asked for a dollar. Iā€™ll wait. Right over here, and Iā€™m ordering a large Merlot. No really, Iā€™ll wait :grinning:

(Shadow boxing is now over)

The characictures have never made sense, and today they are beyond ridiculous.

Doesnt matter if they make sense or not, they are still real and evident even with educated ā€œfine peopleā€.

I know, I know. I am simply being stubborn, because this could be one of those seemingly simple fixes that would improve life for everyone, at zero cost.

In fact, I am gonna go start a new games thread called Tilting at Windmills.
The distribution of anti-Semitic flyers on the campus of Texas State University highlights the dilemma over whether university administrators should speak out against every such incident on campus, or whether it only serves the interests of those distributing the flyers by giving them more publicity.
The flyers, which were removed from the campus in San Marcos a little over a week ago, read: ā€œWhite man, are you sick and tired of the Jews destroying your country through mass immigration and degeneracy.ā€ Emblazoned with swastikas, the flyer indicates that it was issued by the Daily Stormer, a far right website which has a following among neo-Nazis and white supremacists.
Following its discovery, Matt Flores, a spokesman for the university said president Denise Trauth did not plan on making a statement on the latest flyers, the fourth wave of extremist leaflets since November, adding that she had already made it ā€œquite clearā€ that the opinions expressed by the flyers go against the universityā€™s values.

But Trauth did release a statement in which she said: "Although I have shared my thoughts on this type of reprehensible activity numerous times, I cautiously do so today because it gives the perpetrators the attention they so desperately seek."
A copy of the flyer, which was found at the schoolā€™s Albert B. Alkek Library, was posted on Twitter by an accounting student identified as Sierra on her Twitter account.
Colleges in Texas have been swamped with white supremacist flyers in recent months, mySA.com, a website of the San Antonio Express-News, reported on Saturday.
Speaking to the site, May Olvera, a journalism junior at the university, said she first saw the anti-Semitic flyers shared on Facebook by some of her Jewish friends who were ā€œshocked and uncomfortable.ā€ But she added that the incident and those that preceded it, ā€œmade people more alert and brought them together.ā€
ā€œAll of you know that the deplorable sentiments contained in these communications violate our university core values,ā€ university president Trauth said in the statement, noting that the Anti-Defamation League "has reported at least 107 incidents of unauthorized flier postings across more than 60 U.S. universities since the beginning of the current academic year."
The ADL has reported that the Daily Stormer was founded by Ohio-based Andrew Anglin, in 2013. Anglin is trying to reach out to ā€œall disenfranchised and angry White males under the age of thirty,ā€ ADL said, adding that he created the site after founding another neo-Nazi site, Total Fascism, in 2012.
And ā€œIsrael Apartheid Weekā€ just happened/is happening at universities right about now as well.

My daughter somehow wanted to watching Alvin and the Chipmunks meet the Wolfman on Netflix.

The movie features a minor character who is a scam artist on TV trying to sell books about monsters and charms and such to gullible people who believe in such things. During the ad they make a reference to committing arson for insurance fraud.

They have this obvious crook in their nose and talk with a voice I can only describe as having that accent used for old Jewish people in comedy.

I feel like I want to put off having conversations with her about racism, about anti-semitism, about other hatred and bigotry until sheā€™s older, but I guess I only have the luxury because my family isnā€™t targetted by any of that.

For anyone raised in a Jewish household who feels like answering, do you remember what age you were when you were aware that people would treat you badly because you were Jewish?

I remember being three or so and asking what the numbers on Grandmaā€™s arm were, and being told about Auschwitz. At school, starting when I was about 5, we were told that we had to be on our best behavior in public at all times, because the goyim would come and kill us painfully if we misbehaved.

FUN ANGRY STORY TIME!
My art (below) has sold over 32 items on Redbubble! Putting it on Tumblr caused it to spread quite a bit. I love how many awesome antifa, PoC, feminist, anti-nazi folks have been displaying my art. It makes me proud, even though I wish I could do it for cheaper.

Yesterday I got an email from Redbubble which is as follows:
Hi Sarah,

Thanks for being a part of Redbubble. We are writing to you regarding the following works which we have today de-published as they fall outside our guidelines on appropriate content.

https://www.redbubble.com/people/zaychik/ā€¦/25052378-untitled

Please take the time to familiarize yourself with our Community Guidelines and our User Agreement to ensure that you do not upload any work that may be considered inappropriate according to these guidelines. We also ask that you review your current portfolio and remove any works that may fall outside our content guidelines. In addition, we must remind you that subsequent reports regarding inappropriate content can result in an account suspension or closure.

Kind regards,
Redbubble Objections Team

I was furious. First off, it means some asshole neo-Nazi supporter or, as they like to say, ā€œdefender of free speech and civil discourse uwu!ā€ reported my art. Because not only do Nazis deserve to be protected, any art that openly discusses anger toward them is too ~offensive~. Free speech my ass.

I intend to write Redbubble, but to also discuss this publicly and openly. When society prioritizes the safety of speech of NAZIS advocating for racial genocide over the safety and artistic speech of a Romani Jewish artist, we have a problem. In the meantime, I vow to make my own prints and products of this art available for as cheap as I can. Itā€™ll take a bit longer to ship because itā€™ll be handmade, but screw Redbubble.

Meanwhile, shirts like this that openly CELEBRATE Milo Yiannopolous, active alt right misogynist neo Nazi, are fine. As are shirts that read STOP BEING POOR. See here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/masdilurah/works/25341390-milo?grid_pos=20&p=t-shirt&style=mens

Yeah, okay buddy.

Please feel free to share this post.
This is a problem.

Just like the Nazis of historical fame, the modern Nazi knows all the rules of ā€œproperā€ society and abuses social norms and expectations to their favor.

Exactly ! Iā€™m still on the site and would have noted it in a little whileā€¦
