Nah. The system is just fine. Civilian control of the military keeps the military from being a culture unto itself and distanced from those who they fight for. It also keeps the military from being entangled in controlling civilian life.
The one thing military leaders in the US don’t want is the headache of controlling people, other then those who volunteered to be part of it. Even military occupation is usually fobbed off on Civil Affairs units. People whose training comes from entirely outside the military. Reservists with civilian jobs/skills useful for keeping a community running.
Part of that system is the notion that illegal orders don’t get followed. Even by civilian leaders.
He lost. He really lost this time not like last time.
I’ll miss him. He was a bad President but he had high ratings. I hate that in a President.
Looks to me the situation is strangely similar to the “Strategy of tension” that happened in Italy in the 70s. The difference is that in USA there aren’t neither strong worker unions or a socialist or communist party and that CIA and KGB are involved differently.
I expect some neofascist affiliate putting bombs on train station, airports and places, and try to frame some BLM activist on these bombings.
You’re assuming competence on the part of the right wing.
It depends if these group are backed somewhat by persons with capacity and foreign entities, if police closes an eye on these groups and so on.
Organizing thugs that are loving to use automatic weapons it’s possible like happened with islamist terrorists.
And especially if part of the general populace thinks that these groups are “comrades who are wrong” makes more difficult to stop them.
I think that it’s difficult that they could make a succesfull “golpe”, provided that the majority of the republicans and all the democrats politic will fight against them and trar them as what they are neofascist terroristst.
And yes, even without they making a coup, it will suck hard. (below august 2th, 1980 bomb in Bologna station)
The whole point of the President being commander in chief is to ensure civilian control of the armed forces. There is no single officer who sits at the top of the chain of command, with that title and that power, who could order the entire army to mount a coup, or could exploit their position to become an unelected political player. Unlike in Pakistan or Turkey, for instance, the military is obedient to the government and doesn’t overthrow it every time a bunch of generals decide that the fate of the nation cannot be left to the people.
The problem is that Americans have fetishised the title of commander in chief and and turned the President’s possession of it into exactly what it was intended to prevent: one man standing in personal command over the whole military and, by extension, the American people.
My grandfather didn’t drop tons of explosives and incendiaries on the homes of Germans from a B-17 just to have Nazis on our doorstep. This cannot stand.
That little attack there is yet another black mark on the CIA, 100% funded by them and their “anti-communist” efforts in Europe in the 60’s and 70’s…
What a bunch of jackoffs. Or would that be non-jackoffs? Do they still carry the torches? I’m surprised nobody ever lobbed a gasoline filled balloon at them.
Umm. No.
There are plenty of references to militias in this wikipedia article (which sources plenty of Western media accounts.)
Militias are, of course, perfectly positioned to commit war crimes.
Ustasha militias and death squads also burnt villages and killed thousands of civilian Serbs in the country-side in sadistic ways with various weapons and tools. Men, women, children were hacked to death, thrown alive into pits and down ravines, or set on fire in churches.[120] Some Serb villages near Srebrenica and Ozren were wholly massacred, while children were found impaled by stakes in villages between Vlasenica and Kladanj.[121] The Glina massacres, where thousands of Serbs were killed, are among the more notable instances of Ustasha cruelty.
Takei’s heart is in the right place, but “militia” can be a very ugly word.
Takei’s point is that in America “militia” means friendly, wholesome, patriotic men with guns, not evil men with guns.
I see your point but choosing one word for groups of armed people and another for other groups is a political discrimination. When I was growing up one group were called terrorists and another were called paramilitaries. It was literally in a style guide written by British military intelligence for the BBC. The US had one for Vietnam too which was Orwellian in its doublespeak.
The term paramilitary could then also be used as an adjective before the word police further emphasising the ideological and operational concord of the state and loyalist terrorists.
This looks like that to me.
Political discrimination is the essence of politics.
Dead ones are still not good for much.
The police actively support the PBs and other racist groups. I saw it enough times here in the Northwest.
