"Anon" vs Iggy Azalea

But he thinks that one white dude was pretty okay!

I think it’s personally fine if you don’t like rap, but you gave no real reason why you didn’t like her, based on something internal to the genre, without acknowledging that she might have something that makes her good within the genre… the fact that you list lots of other awesome rappers there in that list indicates that you know more than you’re saying, actually.

It came off as being totally dismissive of the genre rather than ā€œI don’t dig Minajā€ (and I’m not a huge fan either, but that’s neither here nor there - I can acknowledge she had talent by the dictates of the genre).

What do you find so detrimental about her? Cause that’s an awfully specific point to bring up.

I’m just curious what he finds ā€œdetrimentalā€ about her… seems an odd thing to say. I’m not a huge fan and could agree that she’s not the top of the pops when it comes to rap…

I do think that ā€œone white guyā€ was pretty okay. To be fair, he’s showed that he’s pretty mysogynistic and homophobic through his lyrics (which is unfortunately not at all unusual for the genre), and a pretty troubled individual in general, but there’s no denying that he has insane skills. To resort to ad hominem attacks by implications of racism etc… and to dismiss him as ā€œthat one white dudeā€ speaks far more about you and the strength of your argument than it does me… Honestly, the Eminem example was brought up specifically because someone had posted it here earlier. And I note that ā€œI’m not a big fan of rapā€ because that’s simply true. It’s not one of my primary listening genres. I like a lot of different genres, and it’s not unusual for vastly different things to be playing in the background while I’m working on something. Sometimes it’s Dinah Washington. Sometimes it’s Sepultura. Maybe an Erasure marathon. Sometimes it’s even (gasp) a bit of Cypress Hill.

Anyways, my issue is when people like Ms. Minaj get touted as prime examples of the genre, I think it diminishes the work of the people whose shoulders are supporting her. There have been a lot of really skilled rappers tackling a lot of important social and political issues, or even just expressing raw emotion, frustration with social or financial circumstances, etc… and then there’s:

ā€œThis dude named Michael used to ride motorcycles
Dick bigger than a tower, I ain’t talking about Eiffel’s
Real country ass nigga, let me play with his rifle
Pussy put his ass to sleep, now he calling me NyQuil
Now that bang bang bang,
I let him hit it 'cause he slang Cocaine
He toss my salad like his name Romaine
And when we done, I make him buy me Balmain
I’m on some dumb shitā€

Conclusion: Totally synthetic product (musically and physically) designed for marketing appeal primarily, idiotic lyrics, and everything is designed simply to get a reaction no matter how offensive or over the top it has to be to do that. I don’t deny that she’s got flow and delivery, but I just don’t think it’s anywhere near as good as everyone says. Everyone acts like she’s the best thing since sliced bread, and I just don’t see it. Maybe it’s just me reacting to her being a bit of a social troll, and that prevents me from acknowledging existing skills, but I simply refuse to place her on the pedestal that everyone else seems willing to lift her onto.

Seems like the primary beef everyone’s having is more to what came off as a glib dismissal of a genre (which it wasn’t, just more of a statement that rap’s not a primary listening genre of mine), then a desire to have an opinion on said genre. Hopefully that bit’s been cleared up.

Also noted, This is just my opinion, you’re perfectly free to think whatever you want about her without (hopefully) without anyone attacking you for having an opinion, questioning your qualifications for having said opinion, etc…

Have a nice day!

Oh man, here’s a can of worms, but I also am not a huge fan of the Offspring…

This one’s easy though, they’ve gotten so much airtime in my area that I’m just so sick and tired of hearing pretty much every popular song they’ve done. Most of their stuff has acquired ā€œearwormā€ status through overplaying. Only band worse in terms of overplay desensitization IMHO… Green Day.

(awesome response in video form though!)

Are you aware that she has more than one song? And, there’s more to that song than meets the eye (ā€œI’m on some dumb shitā€) – hip hop is poetry. Poetry isn’t always literal.

Besides, ā€œI let him hit it 'cause he slang Cocaine / He toss my salad like his name Romaineā€ is fucking brilliant, imo. That is a hilarious and clever play on words. It’s also very dark, when you stop and consider the lyrics.

Cherry-picking lyrics isn’t helping your case, especially since it’s clear you’re not so good at analyzing them, anyway.

She’s overtly and PROUDLY sexual, and she’s black. That’s why.

Wow, really? In the last few responses, I’ve quoted at least four of her shitty songs.

I guess I’m just some uncultured cretin in that I can’t see the beauty of the poetry in rhyming ā€œjizzedā€ with ā€œdissedā€ or thinking that

is either deep or brilliant. Also by ā€œdarkā€ if you mean that she’s rapping about trading drugs for sex, seems to be a common theme for her, trading sex for something…

Anyways, this has just become a series of ad hominem attacks for shits and giggles, not any serious discussion about the subject, so I’ll leave you with your Minaj Love in an echo chamber of your own Tumblr SJW screams.

How do you know if this is a common theme if you dislike her and therefor don’t listen to her? Or are you just assuming because she is very open sexually in her lyrics, that she’s nothing but a whore? Because that’s essentially what you just said.

PEE ESS: Just because she writes about something doesn’t mean she’s talking about herself. She is telling a story. It isn’t necessarily autobiographical. Weird that you assume it is.

Also, you don’t know what an ā€œad hominen attackā€ is, clearly (how shocking).

in an echo chamber of your own Tumblr SJW screams.

… Oh.

This is just as bad as someone in another thread who stated" the mind of a true liberal defies all common sense like that."

White men appropriating hip hop culture and @Bobo thinks it’s a great response. How not surprising.

Well, if your primary response to someone having a dissenting opinion is to shout them down over and over again (rather than rationally discussing the actual subject matter), tossing in impications then statements of flat out racism and sexism then you’re simply going to get called out for it. Mindysan was willing to have a discussion about what boiled down to the mechanics of why I don’t think Nicki Minaj is as good as everyone else thinks. You on the other hand want to make racist implications because I cited an example that someone else posted here on BB as an example of skill simply because the guy doing it was white.

At this point, it’s not a discussion. It’s a very pathological and unhealthy bitch session, with repeated attacks on my character, and consequently not something I’m willing to participate in. So I guess you win. All the shouting down and character slander has worked. A million imaginary internet points for you!

I shouted? When? I didn’t shout at all. Interesting that you interpret my responding to you as shouting merely because I don’t agree with you.

ā€œBitch sessionā€

Yeah, you’re not sexist at all! Totally!!

ā€œSJW screamsā€

Yeaaah, you’re the type who says ā€œSJW screamsā€ with no irony. You are … very transparent.

Holy crap, just can’t let this end can you? ā€œBitch sessionā€ as in common use ā€œcomplaining; gripingā€. Not a statement related to sex or genitalia in common use. I’ll grant you that original etymology was probably based in someone complaining like a ā€œbitchā€ or female dog, but I think that any implications of gender have long been lost in common usage, language being a non-static thing and all.

If you look for demons in every shadow, you’re damn sure going to find them.

And I can unironically make ā€œTumblr SJW screamsā€ because it is exactly that sort of behavior that makes that particular forum so toxic. If you don’t like someone’s opinion, then pummel them repeatedly with unsubstantiated claims of racism and sexism etc… until any honest discussion is drowned out.

And thank you Falcor for recognizing the nature of what this ā€œdiscussionā€ has become.
