The thing to remember is that when the video started, she was in her car in front of the opened garage door to her apartment. She could have driven into the garage and closed the door behind her, and what would be on that video? A random clip of a vehicle speeding through a parking lot (in the related clip), and a car going into a garage.
She got out of her car and approached the guy.
There’s an outside chance she was afraid that if she entered the garage he would follow, we can’t see into her mind. What we can see is her getting out of her car and approaching the guy, so I find it hard to believe she was that afraid of him, physically.

This dude is now selling t-shirts that say “Karen…are you OK?” and “I had a black husband. -Karen” https://www.instagram.com/karlosdillard/
This whole episode seems gross.
There are real cases of white women falsely accusing black men of assault that we should be focusing on because, as everyone has commented, that is a serious issue than endangers the lives of black men. This is a white woman freaking out because she is being recorded, her license plate is being recorded, and where she lives is being recorded, all to shame her as a racist later on the Internet.
That made her look so, so much worse.
Not a counterpoint to your post, I was just amazed at how the NYT article missed the mark so widely. I had no sympathy for her before reading it, and somehow even less after.
Do you think she feels shame?
I hope she does.
hol’ up.
Just to be clear. This guy has definitely had disproportionate justice served against him for the crime of being born black.
If she faces disproportionate justice…IT"S FOR HER ACTUAL WORDS AND ACTIONS.
Good, but it’s not about you. Rather than simply dismissing the man’s behavior consider why he did what he did? Don’t worry about Karen, she’ll be fine.
Can we ratio and amplify that shit by 1000X?
She has endless excuses and bottomless self-pity, but the two times he mentions her calling him said racist slur she doesn’t object at all that she didn’t.
Thank goodness you’re here question his veracity for her. /s
If you want to debate whether escalation is wise, that’s one thing, but if you’re going to call the response “disproportionate”, ask yourself why you feel it was disproportionate. Was it:
1 - Because the victim followed the person spewing racial insults in an attempt to get them to atone?
2 - Because the perpetrator was terrified of being on camera despite their ability to simply apologize or walk away?
3 - Because you feel people shouldn’t have a mob set on them for this level of racism?
4 - …or some other reason?
That being said, if your intention is to come to this topic and say that you don’t feel the woman deserved to be called out for what she did, then you are, in essence, saying that either some level of racism is ok, or that some level of racism shouldn’t get people upset at you. I’m not sure which, but I do know that we have no intention of letting comments along that line stand. Question the methods or the specifics of the event or whatever, fine, but don’t come here and say she shouldn’t face consequences for her choices, because if public shaming over this is severe, it’s because the public is done with this shit, not because the events were portrayed any differently than how they actually occurred.
This.
Because there is no “1 to 10” scale for racism and we can ignore anything below a 5 and laugh at a 1.
No. Just none of it. Ever.
I must’ve missed some context in there, because I didn’t see anything about racial epithets. Maybe I stopped watching the video too soon? I started cringing at her abject terror and nope’d out pretty quick.
This started with her calling him racist names, and then trying to slow him down / brake-check his car, according to accounts.
I would rethink that position. Most POC don’t have time or energy to deal with that shit. Especially since her continued meltdown just elevates the risk to the guy filming it, even at this moment, in Seattle, where people are very hesitant to call the police.
Ok, I saw the first video and read the text below and then I checked out. I saw “here’s the edit that’s viral on Twitter” and assumed it was all remixes from there. I would rescind my previous comments, but they’re all gone anyway.
but I do know that we have no intention of letting comments along that line stand.
I don’t know exactly what that means, but you might consider that you have a lot of BLM supporters on your platform trying to engage, learn, and try to figure out what the “right” choices might be with the SAME goal in mind. They should be allowed to engage and make mistakes along the way. Better to engage and fuck up, create opportunities for learning, than stifle engagement and get nowhere.
Thanks, I will rethink it.
The way I interpreted it, when the Community Guidelines say that there is zero tolerance for racism on the BBS, that includes trying to carve out gray areas where some racism might be OK or excused.
The way I sometimes explain it is, even if you’re only at the KKK rally for the free snacks, you’re still at a KKK rally.
… And it turns out he’s got a restraining order for harassing another woman last year.
Well done everybody. I’m sure his account is entirely reliable.
Who shall we get next?
