When I was growing up, a public figure making an anti-Semitic remark was pretty much the end of their career,

If only that were the case. Whether we’re talking Brown, Baker or Bitburg there has long been a willingness to overlook it, as long as it helps the right people stay in power. It seems to be on the upswing, but let’s not act like it was a guaranteed career ender at any time.
