Two of our scientist/bankers – Omicron Nu PI, Ph.D., and Theodore Rump – have both extended their social complexity through elaborated gift exchange and also by volunteering for mission 1. WELL DONE!. Mark Watney’s social skills are apparently still developing.
Volunteering for Mission 1 is crucial because if too few volunteer, everyone else dies. At present, we have five volunteers:
If I have the math right, that’s 121 SEN, so only a 4% chance that any one scavenger gets munched by a space eel. However, with 12 scavengers out there, there is a 38.7% chance that one or more scavengers get munched.
What to do about it? Three options
Nothing. We new the job was risky when we signed on.
Get one more scavenger to join Mission 1
Take a collection to raise another 50 U so that one of our Eel stompers can buy another targeting_algorithm
Whatever happens, I strongly suggest that anyone taking mission 2, 3, or 4 give 5-10 U to an eel stomper if you can afford it.
If the stompers weren’t doing what their doing for minimum wage, the rest of us couldn’t go scavenging. I also suspect that our employers are going to try to kill us to reduce their overhead. First with 11 drones, then 3 murder-bots, and then by trying to get us to kill each other. Friends are going to be important.
