If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t even try to understand the failures that brought us Donald Trump, or who doesn’t even try to see the failures of the Obama presidency, or who doesn’t like to look too deeply at the systemic injustices of late-stage capitalism underlying the modern American experience, Beto O’Rourke provides a great deal of comfort. You can close your eyes, project whatever you want onto the blank slate he presents, and hope for the best.

You can ignore the fact that transcendence and compromise are ugly myths that perpetuate inequality, and that when the concept of transcendence meets the reality of hard-nosed Republican opposition, it immediately decays into craven compromise that drags us further and further to the right. You can ignore the fact that Beto has already demonstrated this Obama-esque tendency to capitulate even while operating in the safest possible blue district. And you can ignore, above all, the obvious, unsettling conclusion: If we elect this man, we are screwed.

Don’t read too much into this people. I’ve met tons of former hackers who turn into neoliberals/“libertarians” the second they get a decent paycheck. No amount of DMT fueled Backorfice antics in the 90s excuses shitty policies. When a politician shows you who they are (votes) believe them.

Huh. Beto promoted money-less society in one of his cDc files.

He also called out poseurs at punk shows.

And… he is recorded as logging on in 1993… when he was 21.

Being an early cDc member isn’t something I expected, but a rich white liberal who is using a Hispanic nickname as well as his skateboarding and punk history to gain cachet, being an anarkiddy when he was in highschool? That’s just part of the elite rich liberal’s life cycle.

Once i was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But i’ve grown older and wiser
And that’s why i’m turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, i’m a liberal

What a coincidence! I was logged in 21 years before that.

He could be just what we need to fight off Putin’s trolls! (Take with as many winks as you want.)

Judging by his voting record and policy stances so far, he is sounding like the Gen X version of the Boomer Biden. Comfortable to a generation, because he feels familiar. None too revolutionary in practice.

Techie here, and I recall the hilarity when Microsoft got bo2k listed as malware. And in response cDc tried to get some MS server radmin tools listed similarly.

being a member of the cDc makes me respect him more.
i’ll have to look further to know if he should be PR351d3N7

Will fully admit I know nothing about Beto O’Rourke except this. Don’t know if the community here likes him or hates him. Never bothered to research him.

I admit my ignorance except here I have to say without knowing anything else about him and knowing he ran against Ted Cruz who I know is a piece of shit, and not ever hearing about Cult of the dead cow before somehow as a former counterculturist he now ranks on my radar as chill.

Just my 2c.

He can also see Mexico from his backyard! (Literally, I gather.)

Anyway Beto, acknowledging that about yourself is a start. Can we talk about your billionaire-heiress wife too?

I know very little of him and im in Texas. I just know that he was a better choice than Ted Cruz, but as a presidential hopeful I am really unsure of him. Will have to see more of him and other potential candidates as time goes on.
