Pink oak in the streets. Purple heart in the sheets.
Given Biden’s age and when /where he started his career, he likely picked what was popular in his particular starting decade, assuming it’s not a family piece.
I hate to tell you this, but to someone picking furniture in the 80’s, mid century mod was “my Dad’s style”, however “classic” it might be considered now. Also, I’d say the association of “this looks like a Washington office” is at least as strong, if not stronger, than “this looks like Wall Street.” Government offices used to be investments and have long haul furniture, not the plastic folding tables they squeak by with these days. If anything, Wall Street was aping Washington, to appear more steady and trustworthy than they actually were. You think like a TV set-dressing intern.
We are arguing about Biden’s fucking furniture?
Is that the most important thing right now?
I take it personally that Biden doesn’t campaign in jeans and a hoodie!

EtA: and there’s not enough hair plugs in the world to give Biden a man bun
It’s like “Is your washroom breeding Bolsheviks?” in reverse
I’m much younger than him and not a conservative by any means and I’d choose dark wood and brass over modern furniture any day. In fact I only recently purchased a Baroque battle painting and had it framed in a gold frame. Does that make me a horrible person in your book?
Well, if you have nothing else to be negative about Biden, criticising his choice of office furniture is a nice way to generate some virtuous outrage…
(Seriously. How shallow can you get?)
There is plenty of things to be critical of… I’m just getting a little sick of people fiddling while the world burns down around them.
Biden has had a lot of tragedy in his life. Maybe it’s a reminder that he’s not immune, that life sometimes deals shit and he isn’t above it.
Hopefully they still are, and they vote.
No, but I would say it reveals that either you wish to project an air of old money, or that you are unaware or careless about what you project; that is if you have a reasonable expectation your dark wood and battle painting to be shown in popular media. If nobody will ever see your stuff then it does not say much. So you tell me - are you horrible?
Seriously, what he reveals in personal choices goes much deeper than most criticism.
Suspenders or belt? Boxers or briefs?
Honestly, what is revealed here is mostly about you.
I was going to do a whole bit about the Sharpie—THE SHARPIE!!—on his desk. No human being in history is more associated with that model of that brand of black marker than Trump. It’s an open declaration that Biden and Trump share the same values, cunningly hidden in plain sight! Etc. etc.
But honestly, you’re so committed to this bit, I really just want to see where you go with it. The internet used to be full of this kind of awesome subtle deadpan humor (performance art? idk), and I really miss it.
Really, I don’t like Biden’s Third Way positions, but sometimes an old wood desk is an old wood desk. There could be many reasons he has it besides making an ideological statement or to signal class allegiance.
Honestly it’s the default setting for elected officials. Trying to read more into it is like criticizing him for wearing a suit and tie to the office instead of a track suit.
Nah, I think you are
And if you don’t or refuse to see it, it reveals some about you as well.
When you say “conservative values” here, I’m not entirely sure that I don’t want a president with conservative values. I think I might like someone who views their role as president as being something with a tradition that should be respected and taken care of like old furniture, that norms like, “don’t be openly racist” and “treat our allies better than our enemies” should be maintained rather than thrown away, that frames of mind such as “nation of laws” should apply now as much as it has in the past. If a heavy oak desk and brass lamp stand for those “conservative” things, then I’d say that the choice of what Biden is trying to project seems appealing.
As far as the semiotics goes are gold plated toilets supposed to represent radical nihilism?
