How about this?
2 Peter 2:1-3, 17-22 (NRSV):
-
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive opinions. They will even deny the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Even so, many will follow their licentious ways, and because of these teachers the way of truth will be maligned. And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation, pronounced against them long ago, has not been idle, and their destruction is not asleep …
-
These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm; for them the deepest darkness has been reserved. For they speak bombastic nonsense, and with licentious desires of the flesh they entice people who have just escaped from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption; for people are slaves to whatever masters them. For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overpowered, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment that was passed on to them. It has happened to them according to the true proverb:
“The dog turns back to its own vomit,”and, “The sow is washed only to wallow in the mud.”
This is why when supposed Christians fall, they fall hard. And the world despises them more greatly than if they had never been Christian at all. Look at the face of a false prophet. Yeah, I think Bill is a dog-vomit kind of guy.
If you believe in God, then anyone who is a “convenient Christian” will get taken down. Says it in our own texts. Never fear. Also says God loved the world. Funny that a lot of alleged Christians never seem to take that seriously.
(And before anyone says, “What about that whole thing where we’re not supposed to judge?” … well yeah, it also says in the Bible that we’re supposed to discern the righteous from the unrighteous … meaning people who stand up for justice. No one gets to determine someone’s ultimate destiny, that’s up to God: that’s the judgment part. But we can always make a good estimation about what direction they’re headed: that’s the discernment part.)
