I seem to remember a documentary about the Church of SubGenius (I probably read about here on BoingBoing) that said exactly that. The Church was a joke, meant to be a joke, but some people with serious problems (religious mania / mental illness) accepted it as real. Or weren’t able to parse that it wasn’t real.

Thanks for the links. It’s a good reminder that disparate news stories can add to a narrative. (There was an excellent post here years ago, documenting how Florida was the epicenter of a zombie invasion, with real news links that, taken together and read within that context, were truly chilling.)
