I could watch it again, but IIRC, he also didn’t turn on the pump (e.g. flip up a lever, select a grade)
ETA: As for not paying first, perhaps he’s out in Real America where everyone’s trustworthy & no one needs to pre-pay? </s>

You definitely have to select a grade, but I don’t think every pump has a lever to flip up any more.

Republicans have become absolutely terrible at marketing. Normally I would have thought that a good thing, but their base is so brainwashed, even the sheer incompetence presented by this ad won’t shift them.

I personally like that the gas tank door was already opened and the cap removed. Indicating they probably felt like expecting him to handle doing all that himself and give his little speech was too optimistic.

He’s not even squeezing the fuel handle. He just sticks it in the (already open fuel door w/ missing fuel cap) refill port and stands there doing nothing useful. Much like what he would do w.r.t. global petroleum prices were he president.

Really? Several million MAGAdiots are evidence to the contrary. Republicans are great at marketing when they use fear and hatred of the “other” as their marketing message. They just aren’t good at the “aw shucks” stuff that Reagan could do.
My 2018 Honda Civic doesn’t have a gas cap. Just a door that I can open with a button from the inside. I’d bet lots of cars are like that.

The only thing that could have improved the video is if it was an EV and he shoved the gas nozzle in the charging port.

Just a little basic ADR would have fixed this gaff, but it’s a sign that even people working on his campaign don’t like him.
As far as campaign ads go, it’s amazingly dull, like Pence. The messaging is the one I’ve heard bubbling up recently, which of course has zero facts (US gas has gone up along with the rest of the world, not due to Biden’s policies, and our increase is actually less % than most countries) but feels local to your wallet, however he delivers it in a way that makes vanilla ice cream seem spicy.

“Biden’s war on energy”, I guess this is a thing bouncing around the right-wing echo chamber.
As others have noted, the price of oil went up when Russia invaded Ukraine, maybe “Biden’s war on energy” is really just “If we supported Russia instead of Ukraine the war would be over by now and and we could afford our gas-guzzling trucks again.”

Cut to Congresspeople beholden to big-donor Big Energy and both not giving a fuck for global warming or the reality of global warming being related in any way to the lingering nationwide record-setting heat wave that has caused refineries to shut down thereby causing the gas prices to rise.
