Some homophobes believe that nobody would be gay if homosexuality were not being spread or promoted in some way. In Russia that takes the form of “gay propaganda” from foreign activists subverting innocent young Russians. Paranoia about vaccines turning people gay is another form of the same idea.
Homophobes in Uganda and probably other African countries insist that homosexuality did not exist in pre-colonial African societies and was introduced to Africa by depraved European colonists. Accordingly, they campaign for the retention of anti-sodomy laws dating back to the colonial era, which they believe represent authentic African values. Historians say that (EDIT: some) pre-colonial societies were accepting of same sex relationships, until Christian missionaries preached against “sodomy” and colonial rulers legislated against it.
