Dems expected to take Georgia and the U.S. Senate

Seems there is still ALOT of work to be done in rural Georgia.
Any special reasons why the state looks like this?

If this image’s proportions were scaled based on population and not county, it would look totally inverted. There are far more people in the blue areas than the red.

This is your periodic reminder that land doesn’t vote.

Yeah - I get that - was looking for ‘special reasons’ as I mentioned.
If population distribution is the only reason then that’s not special and the job ahead is converting the 49% out there there is a better choice.

The quote is not about futility, but insanity.

And Einstein probably didn’t say it, but it’s still genius.

I don’t know Georgia at all but it looks just like a voting map of border counties Northern Ireland. Towns mixed leaning republican: labourers, countryside mostly loyalist: landowners.

Racism. The blue areas are either urban areas where African Americans moved post-slavery (and that anyone else fleeing conservative areas, plus people who moved from other parts of the country) or parts of the “black belt”, where there were lots of antebellum plantations, hence, large numbers of African Americans still live.

I believe that’s correct, yes.

Hm. An interesting comparison.

Something like this?

(Look for the county-by-county breakouts near the end of the article for an approximation of county population size.)

Is that 0.5% of all votes cast, or of votes cast for the putative winner?

As a very, very teeny tiny part of of the grassroots organizers and voters here in Georgia who did what we could to make this historic victory happen, I’m going to humbly accept your thanks on behalf of thousands. Unless you live here, it’s hard to convey the sheer depth and breadth of ordinary folks’ unprecedented activism that made it possible. Almost every Democrat I know got involved in some way in the process – making calls and sending texts, posting yard signs, registering voters, curing votes, writing personalized postcards, working the polls, driving people to the polls, donating money … this was a victory of, by, and for the people of Georgia. I hope that these wins can inspire other red stronghold states’ citizens to put in the time to flip their states in the next couple of election cycles. Georgia is not unique! It can be done, but you have to become a part of it.

I guess it is similar all around the world. It just comes into my head whenever the “real” America or wherever is being discussed is described as rural. I always think “landowners”. Which is different from farmers as farm labourers are farmers but not landowners. And they live in rural towns and villages.

I figured it was more complicated than just population density.
Thanks for confirming this - even though it’s not the answer some people want to see.

Maybe it is a good time to make two more states…can you do that with “only” a majority of votes, or do you need a super majority?

Well I don’t know rural Georgia, but I know rural Kansas/Missouri - and the Democrats are seen as elites who don’t care about them and their needs. Some of their feelings are justified - and some of their feelings are from believing the propaganda that Democrats will destroy America.

Also, the map isn’t a good indication of actual political make up. When you consider percentages, it is more shades of purple in most places.

Indeed. It is the accurate, one, though.

The problem for us going forward, I think, is that the division still going to shape our state legislature and our house delegation. Our state wide politicians are going to be increasingly democratic, though.

The reality is that it’s the GOP that doesn’t care about them and their needs (here in GA). They (not all of course) are so steeped in the culture wars, that they can’t see that.

Not really at this point, no. One party is literally out to destroy any aspect of protections of their rights, including their right to choose their own government, while the other is willing to work and compromise to actually deal with the problems we all face. There is no longer any justification to support the GOP. They have no platform, no plans to govern, no solutions to the problems we face, nothing but negatives against some invisible enemy that doesn’t exist.

I want Biden to give a 2-3 min inaugural speech, then have someone bring up a portable desk and a bunch of prepared executive orders and get signing. Get proposals shipped to Congress the first day. Get this train-wreck cleanup started. We cannot delay at all.
