Search warrants aren’t fishing expeditions. Anything they gather has to be directly relevant to the case presented to the judge.
I wonder if they picked anything up, leafed through it with many a “wow!”, and then sadly put it back?

Kind of. If the warrant allows them to search for “documents” related to the allegation, then (1) they can search anywhere a document might be, and (2) any documents showing other crimes are fair game. They don’t have to ignore them.

Yeah, warrants can be pretty broad when it comes to documents and records. The police often arrest people for child pornography after executing a warrant for something else. The warrant itself can be rather limited in scope, but it does not have to be. (Of course, it can’t be overly broad, either.)

Yeah, they sure as hell wouldn’t do this on a whim, or without basically being strong-armed into it by some unignorable evidence.
Unfortunately it won’t matter to the Republicans, who will simply lie about it until it’s obviously a partisan witch-hunt.
Yeah, I’d assume the place was brimming with evidence of his various crimes - when he was illegally destroying documents in the White House, he usually did a crap job, and even if he had sold off all the classified documents he stole, there’d still probably be paper trails and documents he didn’t bother with. The combination of not expecting consequences combined with his ineptness seem like a potent combo for having oodles of incriminating documents sitting around.
