Um, they did when they legalized gay marriage? :woman_shrugging: Not all of them, but enough of them.

Respectfully, I had thought you might say that.
I feel Roberts would flip, if given another shot at it. I have become too deeply cynical to think otherwise.

Personally, I think if we’re one country we need to think of ourselves all being in this together.
But anytime crap like this comes up, I so wish the reporters would mention how much states are contributing to the federal coffers versus how much they receive. This is not a great graphic, but something along these lines would definitely help frame these stories:

I think letting conservatives control the narrative that they are the only true religious people is not helpful. Are Roberts and Thomas more Catholic than Sotomayor? Are we just going to let conservatives control these narratives, when there have been plenty of religious people in US history who have been on the side of fighting injustice and have actively made this a better country to be in?

By colonizing the position of “true people of god” they end up silencing religious people who are not authoritarian and dividing people who would otherwise be allies to fight against their attempt to forge a white theocratic autocracy.

I care about the positions people take, not how they identify.

Can you say why you feel that way? Has he said or done something to indicate he’d be willing to change his vote? I personally have not seen anything, but not like I regularly follow all he says.

I agree that this doesn’t seem like anything that I’ve seen out of Roberts either. It always seems like his biggest concern is “legitimacy” and I can’t see how flip-flopping improves the legitimacy of the court. My biggest argument the other way would just be that it is 2020.

I appreciate this.
My cynicism is definitely mine, I do own it and the fact that that attitude is of no help. With regard to Chief Justice Roberts, some recent decisions where he has been a surprise ally, his opinions have an almost weasel tone to them, as if giving a wink-nudge to bring a new case, using slightly different arguments might get him to reconsider.
Again, it is just me and my doubtful thoughts when it come to the Chief Justice.

No, not at all. I do trust that Justice Sotomayor hews a view of justice similar to my own, Something I cannot say with certainty of the others (especially Thomas, Alito and “Bart”).

Thanks.

I’ll also say that the more we let the religious right control the narrative and play into that, they more they can pull away religious people who do feel alienated by the “God Delusion” types. All it’s doing is giving the right more ammo. I believe in the concept of religious freedom and secularism because it protects everyone - religious people and those of us who are not religious. It allows us to live in a vibrant, interesting, pluralistic society where we can all benefit from being near people who have different cultures and worldviews that can very much enrich us as individuals.

That’s fair enough. I do agree with @prooftheory that Roberts seems to prize legitimacy of the SCOTUS and will work to preserve that.

unfortunately for his legitimacy project, amy barrett puts him on the losing end of a 5-4 court unless he can convince either justice “my mother broke the epa” gorsuch or justice “i love beer and feeling up women” kavanaugh to join him.

It’s funny because as far as I know he’s pretty popular here, Nazinger wasn’t particularly. And most Catholics would not consider themselves progressive here but surveys of professed Catholics some years ago showed nearly all supported priests marrying, only slightly fewer supported women priests, the overwhelming majority supported marriage equality, majority supported gay priests and liberalising abortion law. I don’t think contraception was in that one as that boat has so fucking sailed.

And yet, when “Catholic values”, which apparently are never reported or covered in the media are covered in the media they are always represented by a small cadre of self appointed experts affiliated with the Iona Institute. That’s a shady charity with opaque funding widely believed to be primarily from US far right groups. They don’t like the current pope and don’t agree with the vast majority of Catholics. So they neither represent the Catholic hierarchy nor actual Catholics. Funny that isn’t it? I have long held that the only real power the far right have is dominating media discourse. And when all the channels of centrist bothsidism go under nobody will give a fuck because they all backed the fash.

ETA when I say their only real power I mean ability. Obviously they have lots of fucking power. I’m usually joking about being their superpower. Like a caped tosser.

No, its not you. That chart is really hard to decipher, but the best I found in a very quick search.
The size of each color doesn’t seem to correlate to anything, it’s as if someone found a random chart and slapped the states on there.

Agreed.

Right? It is pretty funny how the worst are often given the most credit? I find it irritating, especially given the very real anti-Catholic biases in places like the US and UK.

They are quite good at that. They know how to shape the spectacle for their own ends.
