The nut job right loves Catholics: Kavanaugh, Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch*, Roberts.
* Gorsuch may not be Catholic, but he did go to a catholic school.
What they really love is anybody in any religion that’s similar to them in hardline and conservative terms.
They don’t love all Catholics, just a certain kind of hardline traditional American one that supports cracking down on common “undesirables”.
And it’s the same for hardline blocks in other major religions.
The evangelicals may think everyone else is going to hell, but they seem to be fine with a certain practical country club collegiality here on Earth.
I’ve been thinking about that…that one kid has become a focal point, and what he did was the LEAST offensive thing done. It’s the overall behavior around that kid that is horrifying…yet he is the poster child for the defense. ugh.
I know there are ++christians in the US who support Israel because they believe the foundation of a Jewish state is a precursor to armageddon.
I think in the case of catholic judges that’s just where the criminalization-of-abortion pipeline to judgedom flows through. I assume that’s because hardline conservative catholic schools are still actually schools that might prepare their students for law school and to go on to be judges. While hardline conservative non-catholic christian schools are mostly anti-education and anti-reality.
They also cherry-pick from the most right wing, of course. The statistical majority of Catholics are fine with abortion, despite whatever it says in the manual.
I think some wouldn’t let their family marry a Catholic Conservative, or a Hindu Nationalist, but they’re fine as Army buddies or political coalitions.
I just don’t understand where all this blind hatred for these boys is coming from. There are plenty of minorities who wear MAGA hats; and its been shown that it was the Black Hebrew Israelites who instigated things, but no one wants to blame them for anything wrong. None of these teens were chanting racist slogans. None of these boys did anything they’re being accused of, yet so many are doubling down on their initial knee jerk reactions. AND I’M A REGISTERED DEMOCRAT!

Watching a video and disliking what happens in it strikes me as the opposite of blindness.

If the implication is that somehow you can know you are right because people went after you instead of your argument, that is irrational nonsense. If you make a detailed argument and someone calls you an idiot that doesn’t prove you are wrong, but likewise doesn’t prove you are right.

If you watch the video, none of these students were chanting “Build That Wall.” And yes, you have me on the just joining, so my contribution comes into question. I’ve visited the site off and on for years; I was just so shocked that a site I had always felt catered to the more intellectual would be so easily swayed by such automatic anti-Trump bias. Again, I HATE Trump, I think he’s a bully, a moron (how he made so much money baffles me), and bad for our country. But I’m not going to allow any white guilt to make every Trump supporter a KKK member.

Nothing I saw changed anything; the Covington Catholic teens in maga hats taunted and tried to intimidate a Native American elder who waded into their conflict to try to deescalate a hostile situation.

I think you are seriously mistaking two different things here. Young men like this are the ones who hate. People don’t hate them…they just think they are fucking assholes.

In order to criticize the students we are expected to be extremely precise in everything we say, refer only to exactly what happened, look at the best of the behaviour instead of the worst. But apparently in order to defend the students you can exaggerate “they were making racist hand signs” into “they are members of the KKK.”
The racist stuff really, really happened. It happened on video for all of us to see. Pointing out that racist things happened is part of how we combat racism. Overreacting every time someone points out racism is a tool of systemic racism.
