Whelp. I guess I’m old now. Get off my lawn ye damn non-sensical kids.

I’m not suggesting, I’m flat-out stating that while he may or may not suffer from mental illness, he obviously DOES suffer from mental stupidity of such a crippling degree that he really should be institutionalize for his own good.

I have 11 friends and relatives who are gun owners who are comfortable enough with me to share their goofy stories. 11/11 have done things that would exclude them from the category “responsible gun owner.” They range from leaving a firearm unsecured while having their house renovated (and discovering it went missing) to near-death. The absolutely most responsible of them, we’re talking someone who is meticulous, who has people’s lives in his hands on a regular basis for work, had the scariest, most irresponsible episode. He was cleaning a pistol at night at home, and didn’t check the chamber. The bullet from the resulting accidental discharge went through at least three walls in his house - and missed going through his daughter’s bedroom by a few feet.

He got rid of all his guns.

I’d wager the majority of people don’t go to ranges because most shooting practice happens out in the middle of nowhere. If you have empty rural space within an hour or two why go to a range. When I was growing up if we wanted to target practice we went camping, not to a range. Even now I live in an urban county of something like 3-4 million and though I haven’t gotten around to picking it up again people I know know places to go within an hour.

That said, yeah people don’t practice enough, or take it near seriously enough. There aren’t enough SMHs in the world for this post.

Yeah, I was specifically referring to the idea that at shooting ranges, others would call out and correct irresponsible behavior - because true or not, if people aren’t even at shooting ranges, it ain’t gonna happen. Shooting in some open space, even with a few friends, wouldn’t even potentially have that same dynamic (worse, it could be people reinforcing each other’s bad safety habits).

I feel that way about driving - at least the “taking it seriously” bit. But at least there, people are legally forced, in multiple ways, to take it more seriously than they would otherwise.

There seems to be a competition to see who the “edgiest” internet user is. At first, the shallower levels of irony were easily exploited, but as those memes got overused, it became harder and harder to be edgier than the edgelord before you.

It seems like they’ve gone beyond self-parody at some point, and committed to an event horizon of edginess beyond which no meaningful narrative can escape.

A similar dynamic has been going on in porn, where the point of no return seems to be fetishizing people so naked that they’re not even wearing skin.

I still don’t understand. In fact, if anything, I understand less.

There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.

Reading through the article, it looks like in this case it wasn’t “to own the libs”, but actually “to own the reps” (or would it be gops? or magas?):

“[We] are sick and tired of being demonized as gun owners, and looped together with the alt-right just for owning guns,” an admin of Loaded Guns Pointed at [B]enis told Motherboard in a Facebook message. “We are sick of republicans (think NRA) telling us what to do with our property, and we are sick of being told that just because we like guns It means we have to be anti woman, pro life and pro trump.”

It’s still fucking stupid though.

(I was taught gun-safety as a 14yo in the CCF, getting shouted at by sergeants. So I feel uneasy seeing anyone holding a gun who isn’t in uniform, and sometimes even then…)

The phrase “The Gun Community” is not normal. This obvious to just about everyone in every other western country.

If you want to really impress the lads, the format is video. You show a loaded magazine, insert it, chamber a round, disable the safety, threaten your junk, in one take.

You could probably assemble a dummy round without propellant, but that’s like work.

“You libiberals are rooting for people to shoot their balls off.”
“No. Just saying that by all the rules of gun safety, that’s not a good idea. If you keep doing that, some people will shoot their balls off.”

It’s like the right’s coronavirus response in a nutsack.

“I don’t want to say this, I don’t relish the reality, but you start to feel—watch the Democrats, watch the media—like they’re rooting for coronavirus to spread,” Hegseth said on Friday. “I don’t say that flippantly, but they’re rooting for it to grow, they’re rooting for the problem to get worse, they’re rooting for mysteries, unknown cases, quarantines, towns, for it to become an absolute national crisis for one reason and one reason alone.”
