First trailer for 'Star Trek: Picard'

“How many streaming services are there?”

There are four services!!!

@anotherone I really enjoyed both series of DISCO; however, I would love for season three to be about Pike, Number One and the crew of the Enterprise. The uniforms and the bridge set was awesome.

@spejic That was well put. I enjoyed the programme, but I can see your point.

@Mister44 “But from the previews pre-season it still seems to have this slick grim-dark future embroiled in war instead of exploration. Not that I don’t like those types of stories, but that isn’t how I like my Trek.”

So not a fan of DS9, then?

@FlyerJack “And who buys the wine?”

Andorian Hipsters. They love that artisanal, organic crap. Give me sweet, sweet replicator juice any day.

@Avery_Thorn The return of Wesley Crusher would be great. Maybe he could be the main antagonist in Season 2.

@akbar5656 Beared Spock looked amazing in that silver lamé space suit; such thighs!

@Lexicat and @Hanglyman

@cannibalpeas I felt the Moon did a better job of paying off its premise than Sunshine. The third act of Sunshine kind of undercut the film for me.

By the 24th Century, it seems that replicator technology has gotten to the point where cooking is a hobby: deepfake food, you could say. A Maison Picard may be only produced for sentimental value, a present to give to friends or to those few who request one. Heck, it may not even be one of the better wines, more a way of preserving the history of the region. Sort of a living history site, where visitors can take a bottle if they like. I personally would like it if Picard just gave it away, perhaps muttering about how no one appreciates the nuances of a good wine any more, and just drink replicated stuff with Synthehol.

Based upon past explorations of how the economy of the United Federation of Planets works, I suspect it would be best viewed as a post-scarcity socialist structure at the personal level, the Credit being used only when dealing with other cultures or as a way of rationing luxury items. Perhaps personal Credit is capped, so amassing a “fortune” is seen as silly. In this system, you could trade a few credits for a bottle of Picard, or for a chance at getting one if demand outstrips supply.

One has just to look at other subjects of BB posts to know that many people take pride in making their own stuff. Homebrew, sourdough bread, self-written books, carpentry of various sorts (desks, floorboards, radiator covers), even self-made children! Why not wine from your own vines?

Jean-Luc Picard, make it so.

I think the post-scarcity combines with the reputation economy in this case. It’s always seemed that genuine, hand-made food does taste better, more nuanced, more alive than the stuff produced by a replicator.

Also, it’s worth remembering that the replicator food was kind of meh, if you’re looking at TNG and DS9. Sisco’s father, who runs a Cajun restaurant remember, despised them.

I’m a self-made-man. Unfortunately, I’m not very skillful.

The uploader has not made this video available in your country.

Guess I’m not gonna see this movie then.

They don’t want my money.

I liked DS9 at the time, as for a tangental story it was ok. But it was the starting point where Rodenberry’s hopeful optimism ideal started to get pushed aside.

I realize that conflict breeds interest, but I think ST:OS and ST:TNG both had conflict with out focusing largely on war. Though to be fair they both had war story lines.

I dunno, I wanted to like Discovery, I liked the characters and the look as a SHOW, but as TREK it just didn’t hit for me.

Why would they make a trailer that wasn’t available to watch in Canada? Because this is what I get when I try to watch this!

I know a few people who liked Enterprise better than any other Trek. That you didn’t is really just about you. There are millions of fans of that show and no one cares about what the “that’s not canon” crowd thinks anyway.
My point it that I like the Trek universe and even though some of it isn’t something I would watch a second time, it’s future positive sci fi TV and at its worst, it’s still better than most of the competition.

I feel the same way. The Pike story needs to be told.

Maybe the Federation ecomony is one of these?

But the Star Trek economy is very vague as to how it actually works. It’s probably deliberately like that.

I can see that. Exploration is a big part of Trek. In Season 3, DISCO is well set up for some exploration story arcs.

Personally, I would say it’s a mutualistic or socialistic market economy where the means of production are held in common and personal property is respected. But that’s just my headcanon.

So, this thread inspired me to check out The Prisoner. Streaming for free for Amazon Prime members. It’s good!

Prepare yourself for a very odd 1960’s ending. The journey to there is certainly fun.
