I think you’re talking about counterfactual language, and yeah, using “were” for that is increasingly rare. Contrast the original lyric from Fiddler on the Roof (“if I were a rich man”) with Gwen Stephani’s dreadful cover (“if I was a rich girl”).

The real sin is this caused me to go down a grammar rabithole and now I can’t hear George Thoroughgood sing Who do you love, without Whom echoing in my brain.
