That sucks! It’s a great fear of mine, a fear that’s been contributing to a gradual decline in how much I ride.

Yes, where everybody has ridden bikes or rides bikes, and they also have real bike lanes.
Hitting or dooring a cyclist in 
is about as socially unacceptable as kicking children and puppies.
Here in Mississauga 
, many of our “bike lanes” consist of (I kid you not) paint on the road and signs saying “Please Don’t Hit Cyclists”.

Removing the stigma won’t happen unless more people are willing to stand up and say “yes, this is me. So what. Bite me.”
And because of that stigma, there’s no guilt in not being able to be that person, but all credit to those who do. Because it’s hard, and it needs to happen.

My first thought, once I read that it was taught in Driver’s Ed, was that it would involve reaching out the window to open the door using the outside handle (thus giving a rider an opportunity to see that the driver was about to open the door and a little longer to react.) But I suppose in places where it’s raining or snowing or where it’s really cold, rolling down the window to open the door might not be the best of ideas.
