Indeed. It’s a sad comment on the universe that this is the “glass half full” part of the situation. Sigh.

ANOTHER ONE? Holy moly.
Yeah. My first though was “aftershock”, but it’s been long enough (12 days?) that I would have expected aftershocks to have pretty much ended, especially ones this strong. Ugh.
This is starting to seem like less of Elon Musk doing weird shit, and more like him just being the first to publicly roll out what’s going to become a common “feature” of social media…
Unfortunately, aftershocks can go on for years
I think that articles like this miss a fundamental difference between what Elon was doing and what Mark Zuckerberg is doing it Facebook.
Elon does not actually care about verifying anyone. He’s just obsessed with bringing money in and putting blue check marks on fascists so that they can be amplified. They have verified a person named cat turd after all
Zuckerberg has always been obsessed with real identities and tying your online life to your IRL life from the beginning. Because that makes you a more valuable product for him to sell to advertisers.
The way that Facebook is apparently handling verification - name and p profile photo verified against the government ID, unable to change either without going through reverification is solely intended to improve the data that they are able to gather on you while at the same time having you pay for it.
I’m sure that Zuckerberg was inspired to do this by Elon’s extraordinarily limited success with Twitter Blue. Not because of the level of success but just because he saw another means of inching towards a very very very long-term goal and some cover to do that.
I don’t imagine that from a percentage of users standpoint it will be extraordinarily successful, but you know, baby steps towards the panopticon
I don’t really believe that Zuck is much different, though?
But the goal of raking in the dough, either way…
Well, first, I’m guessing that these things have been in the works for a while now, and that Musk just released it earlier than other platforms… These things don’t just appear out of the blue (ha ha, get it), but take time to develop.
Also… “success”?
This is always been the ultimate goal of course… a concept that was literally developed for prisons created for all of us instead. Bentham’s… er… preserved corpse… is rotating… in it’s class… display case?
I’m more concerned about the verification of businesses, special-interest groups, and online journalists who flood that platform with misinformation.
Well I did say extraordinarily limited
I purely mean that he actually sold some to a tiny percentage of his users. It is of course a complete shit show
ETA: and yes I think you are right that all of this stuff has been in the works, waiting for an opportunity to move forward. I just think that the reasons that Elon and Zuckerberg are doing it are very different and Mark’s moves have nothing to do with any success on Elon’s part - it’s just cover.
On the same theme of things that have been in the wings, there has been a lot of reporting that everything that Twitter has rolled out since Elon took over are things that they worked on years ago, decided not to do for extremely good reasons, and are now pulling out of the repository. So Elon’s Twitter is not developing new features so much as digging through the boneyard
Oh hell. We had something like that where Augusta Health and Anthem got into a pissing match and AH was dropped. This resulted in folks who were currently hospitalized suddenly being uninsured for their care rendered after x date. It was finally resolved, but was a huge mess while ongoing.
For decades, FAME Oakland, which opened its doors in 1858, remained the first and only Black church in Oakland, per the Online Archives of California.
I didn’t realize this exhibit was online. Aaaugh.
