I can only imagine how revolted the good doctor’s victims must’ve felt.
Okay, polls that ask “are you an atheist?” tend towards very small percentages. 10% would actually be high. Whereas polls that ask “do you believe in god?” or “are you religious at all?” tend to be much higher. Generally around 20-30%. And the thing is, if you don’t believe in a god, you are an atheist whether you want to identify as one or not.
Ok, thx! (I don’t interpret the “are you religious at all” question as always meaning the same thing to all who were surveyed; I’d imagine one or more responders interpreting that as, say, “do you go to church” (many believers don’t go to church).
On the flipside, I wonder sometimes if at least some professed atheists don’t “fall off the wagon” every once in awhile.
The Pew survey asked “what religion are you?” in a religious identity question. That’s neutral enough for me.
Definitely appreciate how this was addressed by the Scene, as I’ve witnessed the consequences of this attitude play out in person.
A few years back my partner was subjected to ongoing harassment from a mutual friend. Without getting into specifics, when shit hit the fan a member of our friend group (however one we were not close with) considered it her personal duty to broadcast what had occurred to the extended circle-the exact opposite of my partner’s wishes. The immediate effect was considerably greater anguish for my partner, who only wanted her closest friends to know, with even worse long term damage, because every time my partner sees that loudmouth she’s forced to revisit her harassment, whether she wants to or not.
Simply put, it is up to each individual to decide how they deal with it.
“Scott DesJarlais, that hypocrite who’s going to screw over all those poor people. Not the mustard!”
I am guessing, without being chuffed to look into it, that his medical license was revoked, hence his entry into politics. If it hasn’t been, why not?
What does the voice of God sound like? Describe to me please.
Is there a suitable reaction .gif for this line yet?
ETA: I’ll supply a HuffPo link.

Reading it over, it seems there was only one patient whom he urged to get an abortion, so maybe the headline isn’t completely accurate. But then, perhaps accuracy is not such a great concern in this instance.
Here is how I feel about this guy:
Get the FK out of Congress, you sack of ST!
These guys (they are legion): God forgives me.
God (I imagine): Wanna bet?
Abortion restrictions only affect the poor as those with the means to do so will simply “vacation” to where it is safe and legal.
I personally know a number of people who believe in god or subscribe to some form of mysticism, but can’t stand organized religion. They believe in a higher power, which disqualifies them from being atheists, but don’t subscribe to any religion.
Oh god, it’s the Bakkers all over again. Over to you Berkeley Breathed:
They would fit neatly into the “spiritualism” category and not count as a “none”.
I would have thought they would go under “unaffiliated”. I mean, they don’t do religious/spiritual activities in a group setting. As an aside, I also know a couple of self-professed atheists who participate in the local UU church…
Is there a term for the disgust and frustration one feels when they’re presented someone who is caught up in their own hypocritical s**t storm and that person still has the cognitive dissonance to argue that even though they’ve done all the things they rail against their stand is right and not in any way undermined by their own behavior? It’s like this case, or the one where the preacher that says homosexuality is a sin and then is found at a hotel with two gay escorts and a whole lot of blow?
The German word schadenfreude is about taking joy in other’s misfortunes and fails. I don’t feel like I take much or any joy in this kind of stuff I’m just frustrated and sick of the hypocrisy and blown away by the mental gymnastics these people go through to justify their previous actions with the things they claim they “stand” for now.
I should probably just go grab a cup of coffee and CTFO… maybe decaf is a better idea.
Well, this is the type of hypocritical asshole folks in Tennessee and other conservative places get when they vote straight ticket for the guy with an ‘R’ near his name.
