You would not be the first person to make that assumption, but as others note it is an incorrect one.
The Trump Foundation is set up for:
- Allowing Trump to have the superficial appearance of being a philanthropist without having to actually put up any of his own money.
- Occasionally serving as a slush fund to bail out Trump’s for-profit businesses.
It’s impossible to know how much (if any) of Trump’s own money is donated to charity until he releases his own tax returns, but we do know from Trump Foundation tax records that he hasn’t donated to his own charity since 2008.
