High school football coaches fired after allegedly forcing player who eats Kosher to eat pork

Vermilion made the local news last year about this. I’m afraid my info on Sheffield is only anecdotal.

Maybe we can make school less hellish instead of subjecting kids to physical trauma to get them to stay in school? But to do that, we’d have to make our society less racist, sexist, homophobic, etc, etc, and clearly we can’t do that… it makes the white people feel bad, and we can’t have that now… /s

Yep, we’re all a bunch of ignorant hicks down south… /s

Wait! there are racists in places outside of the south! NO! /s

You do realize people can be Black AND Jewish, right?

In Canton, they’d probably manage to win that argument. The running joke about Canton McKinley football growing up was that if the team got busted for alcohol, half of the players were old enough to buy it.

Yes, I was trying to point it out for people who didn’t know.

I mean outside of the Black Israelites. they’re not remotely representative of Black Jews, I’d argue.

Just, FYI, it’s a Black majority school, so I’m guessing that “joke” has some degree of racism attached to it.

In any case, the original post says that the student is a “Hebrew Israelite”.

I’m aware, but they are not representative of all Jews who are Black is my point. Many don’t consider them properly Jewish, due to their mix of religious interpretations. It’s sort of like saying that the NOI represents Black Muslims. :woman_shrugging:

Agreed. Even setting aside the religious persecution, forcing anyone to ingest anything as a form of punishment is totally fucked up.*

*barring, of course, siblings, when you’re little. That’s fair game.

This doesn’t surprise me one bit. My childhood town in Central CA was a sundown town until the late 1960s. Many CA cities had a tradition of racist laws.

The joke comes from the implication that students are held back for athletic, rather than academic reasons. While I understand that there are systemic racial issues involved in the practice (access to scholarships being a big one), it’s less about redlining and more about redshirting.

Black kids are pushed more into athletics, because white people believe that Black people are more “athletically” inclined and less intellectual. People believe that right this second, as we’re speaking. Lots of white people. It’s also why Black majoriy schools are assumed to have problems with crime, etc. :woman_shrugging:

So, again, this “joke” very much has a racial angle.

The whole god damn country is racist. There is not an inch of this stupid country that doesn’t have some kind of history of racism.

well, sure, but some places are worse than others. None of 'em are good, mind you, just various levels of “pretty shitty” to “are you fucking KIDDING me?”

And where is that exactly? Portland Oregon, that bastion of liberalism and progressive thought? In my life time, it was a hell hole full of white supremacists. the whole fucking state was founded as a white supremacist state… California? Also major problems with the KKK and white supremacist groups. BOSTON! A racist hell hole!

I’m a bit sick of being the fucking joke for shit that happens literally everywhere else in America just so the rest of you can feel better about yourselves. It solves exactly NONE of our problems with racism when you assume it’s not YOUR problem but is the problem of some ignorant backwards hick. We either accept that its the problem of every white person in American to help solve, or we continue down this path of undoing any progress we’ve made in the past few decades.

ProPublica did a story on sundown towns in Illinois

Ah, you mean Anna, IL.

Chicago was never a sundown town, but freeways, trains, and public housing were constructed EXPLICITLY along racial/redline borders, leading to the city having the most segregated neighborhoods of any major North American city for YEARS.

There was LITERALLY the right side and the wrong side of the El tracks, and which was which depended almost entirely on your skin color.

Ooof, I missed that.

Racism shapes the American landscape… all of it… again, my point here.
