If Trump shuts Mexico border US will run out of avocados in three weeks

Oldie food pics (directly from printed material) tend to take on a certain patina that makes them appear even more unappetizing. It also didn’t help that the art of food photography way back when wasn’t as sophisticated and flattering as it is today.

Funny thing you mention that. As I was looking through the images some had that patina and some looked like modern photos. I dug a bit more and the newer photos were current photos of various non-US ethnic foods. I tried to make sure to omit those types of photos as I didn’t intend to mock any culture other than the US’s golden years the MAGA dream about.

Based on my multi-ethnic food eating experiences since childhood, I would be much more likely to seek out (and enjoy) a very badly presented authentic Indian/Italian/Spanish/Oriental dish than a visually appetizing, mass market, canned/packaged food-based dish.

Got me thinking about that line from Pulp Fiction: “It’s unfortunate what we find pleasing to the touch and pleasing to the eye is seldom the same.”

Yes, exactly me as well. I was, to be honest, a bit surprised as I had the wrong idea that this style was strictly an americana thing from when “good” food was canned. I would gives other ethnicities version of this a try as long as they were not using spagetti-os which I consider to be pretty much a safe bet.

Good quote. I will have to ponder that today.

They still enjoy making fun of us for that. Which for Canadians is the equivalent of being miffed, but really more of a humblebrag.

Why would we be miffed about 1812? We won. :stuck_out_tongue:

You can burn down The White House again if you really want.

We let you. After all, you had to keep Ottawa.

In a word, yes.

…And to be honest with you, we have to get rid of judges," the President continued, later explaining that he no longer wants to catch people trying to illegally cross the Southern border and “bring them to a court.”

WUT?

… We need to get rid of chain migration," Trump said…

So let’s deport these two, then.

Only Neo-Nazi pieces of shit use that term these days or oppose the massively successful program of family based immigration (which accounts for 60% of the visas granted in this country)

Analyst on NPR stated that if the border were closed for a week, just about every automotive plant would have to shut down as there are many parts that can only be sourced in Mexico. That could be interesting, and bring on a serious economic downturn. (I would note that in my world, “interesting” is pretty fricking horrible.)

I may try them again on their own someday- I sometimes do that with foods I don’t like, just to make sure (though the result is almost always the same, I did have a dramatic turnabout with mustard). But I’ll never forgive them for infiltrating sushi to the point where they’re the main ingredient. Avocado does not belong in anything but a California roll, but now it’s virtually impossible to find sushi that isn’t 60% or more avocado, unless you go to an actual restaurant- and even then it’s in half the items on the menu. By 2050 the sushi department of grocery stores will just be a second bin of avocados, and nobody but me will have even noticed, apparently.

…at least then the downturn wouldn’t begin in 2021, which would be an utter catastrophe.

Still, I’m much more concerned about what happens if Mexico promises to stop the asylum seekers

Are they still death camps when someone else does the killing where you can’t see? How much moral responsibility is involved?

Hopefully someone can talk some sense into the president, who is doing this in our name. I want memos and taped conversations on record that he knows this outcome is probable if Mexico agrees to the thing he is asking.

Talk sense? To Trump? Have you been paying attention? That would be like trying to logic with a 2 year old. All you get is a louder temper tantrum. No, if Fox News starts talking about it being a bad idea, maybe it will sink in. I doubt anyone else could hold his attention long enough. Or dangle something shiney in front of him. That could do the trick. He will forget and then deny he ever said anything about it. “Fake News! ®”

Local is fine, you just have to jar/can extra when it is in season to eat later. At least, that is how we used to do it.

Like the foreign aid Trump just cut to three Central American countries, family based immigration is designed to mitigate many of the problems Trump & Co. are supposedly trying to combat with their draconian immigration policies.

Giving preference to immigrants who already have a family support structure in the U.S. dramatically reduces the odds that those immigrants will end up relying on taxpayer-funded social services. Creating economic stability in places like Honduras dramatically reduces the number of economic refugees seeking to leave those countries for the U.S.

The Republicans don’t actually want to solve any of the problems they ascribe to immigration, they just want to be cruel to brown people.

I just want it on record that he has been told that mass graves of asylum seekers is a possible outcome of the thing he is asking for.

Plenty of noise about the economic cost already. I mean it’s not noise, it’s serious, but…

Anybody operating under the assumption the border won’t be closed is operating under the assumption that powerful people will agree to stop asylum seekers fleeing violence by powerful people.

This will not end well.

OOOORRRRR nobody will agree to anything and Trump backs down, which would destroy his credibility on everything and make him look like a pansy. That really might mean we could breath a sigh of relief about the violent Nazi shit

You already have those. From before Trump.

That is like…the most benign of the things we have done, or the mexican government has done.

That story is (likely) only about how we treated the dead people we found.
