Bobby Kennedy. But after that the law was changed. But apparently that doesn’t mean anything anymore.

Ok, so a fall guy in the DOJ, headed by Jeff “I lied to Congress on national television and got away with it!” Sessions, made the pronouncement that it wasn’t nepotism because the president has unusual powers… (blah, blah, blah) …and can hire whoever he wants.

As for the idea that it isn’t violating nepotism laws because they’re unpaid positions, that is just wrong. The law states that any appointee found to have violated the law is “not entitled to pay”. Not being paid is nowhere near the same thing as not having violated the law.

By far though, my favorite bit of wisdom from the DO(in)J was that the nepotism laws only apply to “executive agencies” and the White House Office (Home of the Executive Branch or the US Gov) wasn’t an executive agency.

Wow, I’m continually amazed at how low our government can sink.

My greatest fear is that the side-effects of @SOCPOTUS’s flaunting of traditional limits in government is that American’s will get used to the outrage and future presidents will have less and less resistance to illegal behavior…

If that doesn’t sound like innuendo, I don’t know what does.

This legislation was an attempt to punish John Kennedy, who had been dead for 4 years. (To a lesser extent, it was an attempt to taint Bobby’s chances to become president.) The Republican hatred of the Kennedys was every bit as rabidly unhinged as their hatred of the Clintons.

Once you have a country in which the poor see themselves as temporarily financially embarrassed millionaires (cf Mencken I think) you are setting yourselves up for a Trump. The election of the delusional by the deluded. A problem of the democracies seems to be that the majority don’t actually care about how things work any more; civics classes are just rote learning, not insight into how things should be run. We’re getting back into earlier forms of government when the big guy had a kind of holy awe that let him get away with, literally, murder.
Though at least it’s Roman corruption (Trump has yet to make a horse a senator though) rather than Byzantine. In Byzantium Trump would have executed all his relatives by now so they couldn’t plot against him.

Oh I agree, our political dynasties haven’t been monarchies. But neither have they been actual democracies - merely oligarchies with democratic sortition by a limited franchise, political machinations and money.

Ivanka Trump: Hey Mike. I think it’s a good idea if we debrief after the morning meeting. Do you have any lunch plans?

Mike Pence: :fearful:

In related news, my neighbor with the large trump sign, small sign, and a few bumper stickers on a few cars, past whose house I drive daily, has none of those on display now.

It would be hilarious if someone were to come by in the middle of the night and do him a solid by replacing the signs that were obviously stolen by libtard haters.

Perhaps she will replace Kellyanne Conway?

I wonder if this is a trend, or just the result of it being a few months after the election. We’re starting to hear a few anecdotes about Trump voters realizing that he’s a fraud. Wish they had cottoned on to that back in November.

Frank Rich and Josh Zepps have essentially said that we shouldn’t feel bad when Trump voters suffer due to the policies he enacts. I’m still going to feel bad for them. Hopefully Dems will do a better job getting a positive message out 2 and 4 years from now. It’d be nice if we could scoop up some Trump refugees.

I mention this neighbor because he went from a lot of Trump, even replacing the aging signs, which he kept lit for months and months prior to the election - to having no trump signs, including removed bumper stickers. I’m not sure what to attribute it to, but it seems there has been a change of heart in the household.

Burn a “MAGA” into his lawn with weed killer and see how he responds?

If he plants it out in the same shape with posies then he’s probably still on board with the trainwreck. If he digs up a big rectangle and sows it with grass seed then maybe he’s had a change of heart.
