Keeping it light -- what TV shows do you find unwatchable?

Whaaaaat is the deeeeeal?

Except for Scrubs, which is technically a dramedy. I didn’t like it at first, but it kinda grew on me.

I don’t know of any besides Rescue Me, which I tried to watch but couldn’t.

How bout the new Saturday Morning Cartoons? I find them creepy and soulless, but like the older stuff.

I like South Park, but honestly haven’t watched it lately. It may have gone downhill since I last watched it.

I am not at all a fan of Steven Universe. I know that’s probably an unpopular opinion here, but so be it.

Reality TV is an oxymoron. I don’t watch TV to watch real life, I watch TV to escape real life. I think the TV producers must know this, because they meticulously stage each and every catfight. The only thing I want to see on TV less than reality is fake reality.

As opposed to what, real ghost shows?

Slightly off-topic, but I can’t stand these hipster white people novels that always skate off toward woo and some sort of metaphysical connection with the universe. Soon these types of books will be relegated to the trash heap along with all the “it was all a dream” shit and the Shalamalamadingdong Plot Twists ™.

Yeah, PBS is cool. Not only can PBS stay, but we need more PBS!

Some days I like to veg out with a beer and watch the sportsball. That’s also an unpopular opinion here, but I care not at all.

Sportsball has its place and time.

Does it count when it’s a fantasy novel and the universe is the source of the magic people use?

I used to like writing ‘dream’ stories then started feeling bad because I realized it was basically consequence free development for a character. Maybe someone else can do a good job of writing it as an extension of the ‘lightbulb’ moment, but I never got the hang of it.

I wasn’t aware such things still existed. They sound terrible. Steven Universe, AFIK, is intended to be a kid’s cartoon. It’s on in the afternoons, but I don’t know what Disney or CN broadcast during primetime because that’s when sportsball, movies and sometimes, if I’m really lucky, curling is on.

Steven universe and gravity falls are good. Unlike Disney’s tween sitcoms (obnoxious twat spouting nonsense. Pop music factory, fantastical situations and the annoying brats that cause them, and so on.)

Gravity Falls is done and gone. It was a tad before my son’s time. He’s watched Steven Universe a couple times, but isn’t that interested. He loves Teen Titans (mom? not so much) and The Amazing World of Gumball (this one has grown on me, it’s sometimes gonzo). Complete agreement on the live-action tweener shows. All can go DIAF.

Maybe, maybe not.

I like speculative fiction and fantasy as much as the next guy, and probably a little more. But I have read some lazy-ass fantasy where whenever the main character is in a bind, Some Magic Happens ™ and once again all is right with the world. Writers, for the love of Christ don’t do this, don’t even think about it.

The problem with It Was All A Dream ™ is that it basically it betrays the reader’s trust. There are unreliable narrators, whom the reader eventually and/or gradually learns are unreliable, and then there’s the “ha ha, fooled you” that comes with It Was All A Dream ™.

Also, the Shamalamadingdong Plot Twist is not a betrayal of trust, but it’s really lazy. It’s writing a twist because you can, and if you’re especially lazy you wind up telegraphing the twist because your twist is made of tropes. The Sixth Sense had a not non-obvious twist, but damn if it wasn’t hidden so well I had to re-watch the movie to make sure they didn’t make any continuity mistakes.

If a Swede can do it, you can do it!

One of the happiest days of my life was the day that show went off the air. The guy is Sean Hayes … and “the girl” could be either one of them. The entire show sucked and wasn’t the least bit funny to me. I hated it. I heard they might be bringing it back. I’ve been married long enough now that when there’s something on TV that I can’t stand, I just leave. I leave a lot.

Magic to me should be as much a source of problem as a solution. Oh you. Have the ability to fix broken objects? Her are people that will break your legs if you do not be their pet repairman. Have Power™ coming out the ears? You are the thing standing between normsl people and slenderman.

Dresden files does a good job of showing how magic should create tension and difficulty for the characters.

See also RWBYs ‘silver eyes’ end of vol3 reveal. Supposedly hints were dropped. It none of the supposed material points to an 11th hour superpower and makes the sacrifices and everything else feel meaningless angst for its own sake. Vol4 seems pretty solid but for awhile vol3 left a bitter fast in my mouth for that and a few other reasons.

For the record I liked the village and sixth sense. Ditto unbreakable. Wish that actually came out after ironman since it is a very good look at superheroes in general. Plus the twist is pretty creative.

Good thing we’re keeping this thread light. I don’t begrudge anyone who watches any of these shows and enjoys them. There’s enough stuff out there that makes us cry that if someone finds something to make them giggle, good for them. I’m not one of those who proudly doesn’t own a television, and I probably spend too much time watching stuff that others can’t abide. But that’s the beauty of the warm glow from the screen – it’s something between you and it, and doesn’t really require any justification.

I’m a Gravity Falls fanboy who’s very sad it ended; most of my actual TV viewing ends up being cartoons – Steven Universe, Adventure Time and Gumball (which looks like goofy fluff but is one of the most visually creative shows on TV right now).

I called the plot twist for The Village before the opening credits finished rolling. That’s how telegraphed it was.

The Sixth Sense was a better plot twist. Even though the tropes would suggest that Bruce Willis was dead the whole time* there was enough false evidence that this was not the case. They did a really good job in planting enough false evidence along the way to try to dissuade the viewer that Obvious Twist ™ was not in fact happening. The Village had no such false evidence at all, and not too many of Shyamalan’s other movies did either. Also, Shyamalan eventually became known as The Twist Guy, so not only was the twist not hidden, everybody watching the movie expected that there even was a twist.

*oh come on did I really need to spoiler that?

Hahahaha OMG really?
Younghusband is one of my closest friends. Thus proving I do know everyone in Canada.
My cousin drives one of the Monster Jam trucks, we took Andrew there to meet him, thinking maybe it could be a segment on Tougher than it Looks. He totally didn’t realize Monster truck people = car people = his fan base. We forget that he’s “famous in Canada” - until we go somewhere his fans are. LOL

I can’t do a lot of the Adult Swim original stuff. I’m just not that high most of the time. Aqua Teen Hunger Force made just enough to sense to be watchable while sober.

Let me preface this by saying: I have children.
Fucking Caillou.

And, as mentioned above, pretty much anything with a laff track makes me want to crawl out of my skin.
And reality tv of any sort.
And the news (local is especially bad).

And (and I’m really, really sorry for this) Buffy. I know, I know. I’ve tried. I just can’t get there.
And Dr. Who (I know, I know).

Ding ding ding!!! Fupping unwatchable.
Followed by Curb Your Enthusiasm, but at least Larry David is a comedic genius (just not one I can stand)

Amen! I watch commercials once a year, during the Superbowl. Most of television is unwatchable, its usually profoundly stupid, nasty, badly written, or uncomfortable to watch.

Exactly. What’s the appeal of “CringeTV”? If I were to watch a sitcom, I’d rather see normal people dealing with abnormal situations rather than the popular sociopaths and narcissists that drive these shows.

I am going to lose every shred of respect I tenously have gained here, and share a show I really like.

Here it goes.

How I Met Your Mother.

Let the mocking begin.

Curb is great although I haven’t watched in ages.
