I always believed Cypher was [ETA: planned to be] killed and converted to nutrients.
- In professional practice, once a device becomes compromised, it gets wiped and reset. Once the machines know that this particular model is prone to disloyalty, they have no need to keep him unless they’re really strapped for bodies. Are they reaaaaally sure they wiped every disloyal impulse? Best to be sure.
- During the negotiations over dinner, he stipulates that he needs to have no memory of his life before. The agents reply, with a small knowing smile, “That won’t be a problem.” I took that as a clue he soon wouldn’t be alive.
I never thought of them as vindictive. Just thorough and unsentimental.

When they resumed the session at 8pm it was a total fiasco. One member moved to adjourn until noon tomorrow, and there was a close voice vote, so they went to the electronic yea and nay count. Even after 15 minutes was up some members hadn’t voted and then there was a crazy flurry of votes well after the time was up. Lots of yelling, but eventually the vote to adjourn (led by Republicans) just barely prevailed.

Well, I guess fascism is a kind of authoritarian revolutionary small-r republicanism, where we’re supposed to invest our national identity in a self-appointed il duce instead of a conventional hereditary monarch, so … it’s kind of hard to imagine the opposite of that in America
We could have extreme Tory reactionaries who wanted to restore King Charles as our head of state, but I don’t think we actually do
