Is it me, or is that Santos she’s smiling at… I kinda get a “you’re next” vibe?
Which side is he on?
No, seriously, I can’t even tell anymore.
Yes, certainly. Conservatism in general includes a strong traditionalist streak, whereas the fascists, while paying lip service to traditional values, are quite revolutionary in the sense that they will demolish precedent and traditional social structures in pursuit of power. For a historical example just compare the Prussian Junkers to the SS thugs and Nazi party bosses, who came almost entirely from petty bourgeoisie and working class, ie. outside the traditional nobility and wealthy bourgeoisie who had been the German elites during the Empire and before.
Anyway, the historical comparisons aren’t really relevant. In the coming years and decades there will be tons of analysis written on the Republican party’s slide into far-right lunacy, and we’ll have accurate definitions of the various strains of awfulness and the people driving them. Right now, though, it seems to me it’s enough to know they’re a medley of stupid and evil, and that all rational and/or decent people should work together to drive them out of power and politics entirely.
Feels a bit like AP is behind the times.
Everyone plays their roles when fascists try to take power. The old-line conservative elites think the right-wing populists can be controlled and used as guard labour for their fortunes. The zentrum believes that the fascists will bargain and compromise in good faith within the context of the democratic system that elected them to the parliament. No-one except actual progressives learns from history.
I wouldn’t be so sure about the progressives, either. It sometimes seems like the only thing we learn from history is that we don’t learn from history.
So has Kev had a chance to repeal 87,000 IRS agents or read the Constitution out loud yet?
I’m picturing him sitting in the Speaker’s office, all alone, banker’s boxes opened but not emptied, surrounded by Chik Fil’A wrappers, a copy of Matt G’s tattle letter, and cold waffle fries angrily ground into the rug under the heel of a $600 loafer. He’s reading his pocket Constitution aloud to printouts of the House members’ faces and the lone staffer that was forced to run them off and tape them to the walls. The air reeks of pickle juice batter and tears of the unwanted. He can’t bring himself to leave, and he’s scared to keep unpacking, so he just reads. Reads and reads and reads through the shame, hoping that next vote he’ll finally get selected for the GOP kickball team captain.
An echo of laughter floats through the door from somewhere in the Capitol. It sounds like AOC, after someone made a quip about Santos. All joy sounds like AOC now. His ears burn, his stomach churns. He sighs and turns the page. “Article IV…”
We’ve been positing that Liz Cheney, Kitzinger, or Mittens could be trotted out by Dems as a lifeline, and wondering how many mid-line frustrated never-Trumpers would jump on board.
Yes, you have a small number “dirtbag left” type progressives who are this close to going “beefsteak”. Still, by and large, modern progressives like Ocasio-Cortez are doing a lot better at recognising the threat posed by fascists in Congress a lot earlier than a lot of Third-Way Dem establishment types. She’s obviously having a lot of fun helping scum like Gosar self-destruct their party.
Dying inside:
Neither group had any qualms about working with each other. Both believed in absolute dictatorships.
Monarchists were the largest contingent of Franco’s support. The Vatican had no problem supporting fascists before or after WWII.
Or Republicans can just surrender and 6 of them just not show up for the vote.
Why would Kevin be surprised that Republicans who don’t believe in majority rule implement it internally?
A 7th vote is currently in progress, and Donalds already has 7 votes. Looks like nobody is changing their vote from last time.
Edit to add:
Gaetz just cast his vote for Trump this time, so that’s different.
