Gaetz is an evil, horrible person, and the vote for Trump is inexcusable, but it’s certainly the case that these votes are getting tedious and repetitive so it’s not that surprising that someone is looking to mix it up a little.
Kevin McCarthy failed to get House speaker votes. In fact, Hakeem Jeffries received more than he did
He’s just efffing with us now.
Agreed. I’m more just expressing frustration over the whole thing… I mean, this isn’t like the 1855 vote that went on for 2 months… but I’m really sick of people in power and their supporters acting like we don’t have things we need to get done in this country. I’m so sick of the whole post-Reagan “government is the problem” mindset that was only embraced in order to gut government programs that we all need and the prevent new ones from being rolled out. It’s exhausting, ya know…
Still. We can at least laugh at McCarthy…
Um, I wouldn’t give the conservatives all the credit for this chaos. The Dems have been screwing with them like this past few days to draw out the agony with all of the rules and protocol
Well, not yet… I think there’s a case to be made that our nation is currently as divided as it has been at any time since the civil war though.
It could devolve to that… I just don’t know if anyone has the patience and I’d guess some adult would DO something to head that off. At least I hope…
And yeah, that’s entirely true about divisions…
Not sure I follow. How is sticking to the rules creating chaos?
Edit to add:
There’s plenty of mischief that the Democrats could do if they wanted, such as giving long, rambling filibuster-ish speeches when nominating Jeffries or whatever. But so far it’s been the GOP folks who are giving the big speeches and dragging things out.
Um, good? I mean, as the minority opposition party, it’s their job to point out dysfunction and discord among the majority. Also, to leverage it for favorable concessions. Just imagine the fundamental change in how congress operates if they could just force House Republicans to not challenge the debt ceiling increases for two years!
No, they’ve been the fucking adults here. They have consistently been voting for their guy.
Can we stop holding Democrats responsible for these right wing jackholes, maybe?
Because it’s funnier to see them squirm around in pain?
Or that it would only take a small miscalculation on the part of Republicans for Jeffries to win the Sperakership?
Because they’re not treating this as a game?
As you say, the Democrats are merely following the rules as written. It is not their job to help their dysfunctional opposition get its shit together.
They are not ‘creating’ chaos, so much as facilitating it when possible, (like voting ‘Nay’ to adjourn) and can you really blame them?
The GQP has gone out of its’ way to hinder progress over the last several decades, and now it’s finally coming around to stab them in the back; I’d bring popcorn too if I was in that same situation…
Edited for typos.
There’s also the problem that McCarthy has shown himself to be spineless and not trustworthy. McCarthy voted against certifying the 2020 election.
So i am not sure why the democrats would make a deal with him.
If a deal were to be made, I am not sure how long lasting it would be. A sizable number of the republicans would go crazy(er).
Anyway. Looks like McCarthy is about to go 0 for 8. He is already down 7 votes.
There is a real easy solution for Republicans. 6 of them just have to no-show for the vote.
11, I think, since it takes 2 to knock the majority down by 1.
If this keeps going much longer, I do expect many no-shows. They don’t have much of an attention span.
Watching these proceedings always reminds me how much of day-to-day life as a congressperson looks like serving a years-long stint in Jury Duty.
