The 10th vote went pretty much like the others, with a couple more of the anti-McCarthy folks switching from Donalds to Hern. One member from Texas, Buck, missed the last two votes for some reason.
Kevin McCarthy failed to get House speaker votes. In fact, Hakeem Jeffries received more than he did
that was awesome. i hope that gets airtime around the country tonight
The earliest demands were supposedly committee assignments and to impose an unreasonably short time limit on ethics investigations in the House (like 6 days, but not pursuing claims against the presidency, of course. They need time to go after Biden). But I haven’t heard any specifics since then, since undercutting the ethics office isn’t playing well in the press.
I have not seen much news about Elon in the last day or 2. Maybe he would like a shot at being Speaker.
I’m laughing, but then I remember how I laughed when Trump said he’d run.
[speaks to self in calm inner voice]
“Even if it looks like a joke to you, someone is going to think it’s a great idea.”
Yeah, best not even joke about it. Sigh. I hate this timeline.
Can a non-natural born citizen be speaker? Or would they just get skipped over in the succession?
The commenters on CSPAN are saying that the dissenters are making progress in extracting a lot of severe budget-related promises from McCarthy and they’re demanding it in writing. Sounds like they want to use the debt ceiling to force severe budget cuts, with no flexibility for McCarthy to negotiate any kind of reasonable compromise with the Democrats.
I think it’s funny how often George Santos has nearly missed his opportunity to vote when called. It’s hard to respond quickly to a name you made up.
If he gets in and keeps any promises, I’m not looking forward to the shape it’s going to leave America in.
Why does that group even care about writing? It’s not like “don’t try to overthrow the government” isn’t already in writing.
There’s no honor among traitors.
And no honor means “it’s just a piece of paper”.
I think this based on commentary somewhere.
McCarthy would probably have better luck getting elected as speaker by taking the list to the Democrats and saying “Make me a better offer”. However none of this seems to work like it should.
Supposing McCarthy does get the speaker job: Once the house is sick of him, how do they kick him out?
Here in Westminster Parliament land (Oz), the only equivalently voted-in role that springs to mind is the Prime Minister. If the PM’s own party wants a new leader, there’s a vote amongst the party called a “spill”, which I love. “Whoops, I spilled the Prime Minister”.
If it’s the entire house getting in on the act (usually initiated by the opposition), there’s a vote of no-confidence.
So what’s the procedure if when the R-team gets sick of him? Or the D-team?
