Kevin McCarthy failed to get House speaker votes. In fact, Hakeem Jeffries received more than he did

I don’t think McCarthy has much official power at this point to control such things. My understanding from another article is that the clerk of the house from the prior Congress gavels in the opening session and presides as speaker until one is elected. And she’s definitely not a McCarthy supporter.

once again a Democrat gets the most votes, yet somehow loses the election. It’s almost like the whole thing was rigged . . .

Really? And who authorized that?

There is no speaker yet, and the House has yet to complete their first order of business, appointing the speaker, so they haven’t passed anything else about that.

I hope no one did it as a curtesy, because curtesy has been dead for years.

This exactly. There’s no deal to be had here ‘cause there’s no mechanism for redress if McCarthy reneges on whatever he might promise, and no background of mutual trust. It’s a single round of the prisoners’ dilemma, not the repeated version of the game.

Also why Cypher’s betrayal of the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar to Agent Smith et. al. in The Matrix wasn’t believable.

I don’t know. He would have probably gotten what he wanted. To the machines it’s just as easy to reintegrate him into the matrix than it is to kill him, and it is equally easy for them to give him a virtual life of his dreams. They’re not vengeful actors, so they wouldn’t have vindictively given him a shitty life.

I’m enjoying the schadenfreude of seeing the Republicans do their clown act several times yesterday on national television. The incompetence and circular firing squad and maneuvering themselves into a situation that hasn’t happened since the Civil War - chef’s kiss.

OTOH- I’m a little scared. The last time this happened there was a civil war.

The last time this happened was 100 years ago, so no civil war, but the depression was lurking in the shadows.

While the schadenfreude is delicious, I’m not looking forward to the heartburn of two year’s of government stagnation and show trials. Also, a murder on the house floor. Because hot headed, bigoted idiots with poor impulse control.

Shortly before the third ballot, some esteemed members of the press started dropping less-than-subtle hints that Democrats should just bail on future votes. This didn’t make sense, because nothing’s more entertaining than watching McCarthy’s political career drown in a kiddie pool.

In the end, McCarthy is going to pander to the Sociopath Wing of the GQP to become speaker, by giving them everything that they want. There’s no other endgame.

Wing? At this point are there any GOP that aren’t?

Hmm. Sociopath versus psychopath?

Excellent point. Let’s say MOST Sociopathic wing.

Their lives belong to me and their constituents, they all campaigned that they were going to Washington to fight for their voters and the American people. Their lives don’t resume until they do what they promised or get sent home by the voters.

Most are enjoying this. But many have friends and family in town and would like to resume their lives at some point.
