Kevin McCarthy finally admonishes Marjorie Taylor Greene, saying her Holocaust remarks were "appalling"

“We can’t hold fascists accountable for their words and actions because then they might become martyrs for the other fascists” is some real 12-dimensional chess.

Maybe I’m naive, but I think social media outrage and actual accountability have been decoupled for a long time now.

That’s some serious fucking projection.

Of all the mistakes I’ve made in my life I don’t count “calling out fascists for what they are” among them.

First the came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
because seriously, dude, they’re just trying to get a rise out of you.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
because have you ever considered that complaining about it is just giving them oxygen?
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
because whatever you were doing obviously didn’t stop things from getting to this point, so why should I join in now?
Then they came for me—
and like, nice work, lefties. If only you had been less strident in caring about all these other people, it wouldn’t impact me now.

2016’s media and social media mistakes, not the intention itself.

That’s about how it’s a waste of time to debate anti-Semites, not about how you should leave them be. To put it in modern terms, you don’t feed the trolls, but you sure as hell don’t ignore the trolls either. You ban them. Greene’s statements need to be recognized and then she needs to face consequences for them.

There is one and only one philosophy for them and anyone supporting or Both-Siding them.

I understand all of that.

I also understand that this is a clickbait cycle that buries viewers in an avalanche of things to be outraged about that distorts their ability to analyze, think clearly, and react. I also understand that that clickbait cycle feeds into split media ecosystems in which each piece of content will be twisted to reinforce priors. I get that the right-wing ecosystem pushes and reinforces fashy priors wherever it can that can’t be dealt with just by ignoring them. However, and maybe this is me being too cynical or not as informed as I could be, I don’t see where the tactics of outrage, clickbait, media condemnation, etc are actually working. From what I can see, and this may be an online distortion, it seems as though right wing nativism and xenophobia is even worse than the post-9/11 mid-00s and media empires are being built on catering to their adherents delusions. I don’t claim to know how to fix that, but I do wonder if the outrage → accountability cycle having been so publicly broken is just setting up more mass disillusionment and susceptibility to post-scarcity agitprop.

Edit: I went back and deleted the posts I made in bad faith here. I apologize to everyone for acting like a rotten butt and responding with sarcasm or confrontation when it wasn’t warranted. I should have been more thoughtful with the first post I made in this thread and also been less reactive in the subsequent replies. Thank you for being civil even when I wasnt. I hope that you all have a great day.

Do you really think that’s a problem here on BoingBoing? Yes, we have a handful of Useful Idiots and the occasional right-wing or Libertarian tr0ll, but for the most part this is an educated and liberal/progressive audience that finds it valuable to be informed about and discuss in context when a fascist (like Greene) is being a fascist or when an appeaser (like McCarthy) is being an appeaser. We ignore these scumbags at our peril.

I interpreted that line in Satre’s rant to refer specifically to gentile privilege and how anti-Semites bearers of said privilege are able to fuck around all day playing devil’s advocate or 'asking uncomfortable questions" or ‘just asking’ or 'just imagine that-ing". Not that Satre is saying that they have a right to express themselves.

You may be right, but unfortunately they never fall silent.

This. The only way to stop people who use their privilege to abuse from doing harm is to take away that privilege.

So do I and I came here to say exactly that, only you had already done so. That said, I have never heard it before. Did she make that up or is that a thing horrible people say all the time?

People who selectively quote Sartre should be obliged to read his complete works.
