None of this should come as a surprise. Fascists are sadistic and violent by nature. And Nat-Cs and other Xtianist fundies see children as the patriarch’s chattel, to be done with as he pleases. It’s a not-so-extreme example of the worldview underlying conservatism in general.

There aren’t details on the 2018 lawsuit, and I’m not sure I want to go looking, but, from the original article:
Police arrested Raymond after receiving a complaint in March 2022 from the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services about “potential child abuse” at the Lakeside school, where they learned of the packing tape incident. The three victims reported they had trouble breathing and “that the removal process was painful,” police said.

Two months later, Raymond was arrested a second time on the second-degree child cruelty charge.
It was obvious a long time ago he couldn’t be trusted with the care of children but I guess some people figured he was okay because

Is there a registry for this kind of raw child abuse? these are the things we know about, I wonder how much went on behind closed doors. I hope the kids recover but that’s some scary shit visited on them at such a tender age. Get away from that religion kids, it’ll kill you.

One hopes the 4 year olds, who are likely pretty small with small lung capacity, did not suffer brain damage, though I am guessing it is possible if they were O2 deprived long enough to ‘go limp’.
Is ‘go limp’ a Xian Nationalist Sadist Patriarchal Asshole euphemism for made unconscious? Depriving someone of the ability to breathe is attempted murder. It is NOT the off switch for a child in tantrum.
As someone who was nearly murdered by being deprived of the ability to breathe over 60 years ago, I can assure you, it is NOT something one ever gets over. The trauma is real and lasting. Maybe someone in prison will explain the reality to this disgusting excuse for a human being.

Yeah, there’s little doubt this guy has been abusing children frequently and for the entirety of his career. These aren’t isolated incidents. When your only tool is a hammer, etc. etc.
Heck, I went to a regular public school in the 70s/80s where corporal punishment was the norm. It was usually just straight up assault committed against students, and for the most part the parents didn’t care because “my kid’s a jerk and probably deserved it.” I remember seeing a 4th grader get paddled for getting out of his seat during lunch without permission (yes, the offenses were completely arbitrary and often minor), and the kid limped for at least the rest of the day.
The only respite was, once and a while, some teacher would get it in their head to paddle a 17-year-old almost-man who played football or baseball, and the student would explain how hard they planned to hit the teacher afterwards (or just do it). That would usually put a pause in the proceedings.

The MAGAts and Xtianists would love to bring corporal punishment – especially the arbitrary kind that “somehow” ends up targeting minorities – back to American schools. It’s one of the reasons that Project 2025 talks about abolishing the federal Dept. of Education. As with abortion, they’ll take their usual “let the states decide” approach to permitting institutional child abuse.

My late stepfather famously turned the tables on his miserable petty tyrant of a teacher in class and mid-punishment when he was around that age. It remained one of the most satisfying moments in that accomplished man’s life.

Corporal punishment in my home state (Pennsylvania) ended by law in 1977, when I was 4 years old and had yet to set foot in school. Nobody cared. That’s not to take away from your point, but it’s at least possible that if somebody had hit a kid and that kid’s parents had the resources to escalate the issue, it’s possible that somebody would have taken note of the actual law. But in Pennsyltucky? Unlikely.
What might have caused a ruckus was if a teacher hit a girl, but that was a VERY rare occurrence, because “chivalry” and…not wanting to be told they couldn’t hit kids anymore and/or getting beat up by somebody’s father.

This is true. Until a critical mass of parents changes their own views, this garbage can continue to be accepted. As others have noted, I doubt this Xtianist MAGAt’s behaviour was a recent change or was unknown to the school community. The law only goes so far, but it sets a standard and guidelines and provides consequences to the perpetrator when a victim avails themselves of it.
MAGAt social policy, such as it is, is centred around putting children, women, and minorities “back in their place”. Putting this creep in the slammer would be a start, but making sure he and his ilk don’t take power anywhere in America is our larger goal.
