More likely than not, the insurance company narc’ed on him. Once he started making claims past the $61k paid out, that likely triggered a special investigation unit effort. Which leads to examinations under oath, social media searches, interviews by investigators, sometimes surveillance. Most of which compels an insured’s cooperation as a condition to coverage in the policy.
In many cases of fraud, it goes under the radar of claims because either the amounts involved aren’t big or difficult to prove conclusively. Even when it’s obvious, like using a false address on a policy, statute and case law works against the insurer with difficult burdens of proof.
This guy got greedy and pressed his luck after already getting a generous payout. Once he started publicly accusing the insurer of malfeasance, they made a point of bringing in law enforcement. Claims examiners can be very petty people and will take fraud personally.

I remember the discussion about this when the news first came out. A lot of people were suggesting it was an insurance scam. Some of the YouTube comments on the original report say as much.
One of the biggest tells was that, even if you were oddly inclined to spray paint a building you were going to burn down anyway, you wouldn’t spray both “biden” and the anarchy symbol. Biden supporters aren’t likely to be anarchists and anarchists aren’t likely to be Biden supporters. But a conservative who thinks the left is a singular hivemind wouldn’t necessarily make the distinction.
