Man exercising right to open carry robbed at gun point

Open carry for no reason is like throwing around profanity for no reason or protesting the ‘black helicopters’, protected right but probably used badly in many cases.
People need to get over firearms being a left vs right political statement and remember that whether it is a survivalist or a Black Panther they are exercising a right that needs to be protected just as much a porno protects the less controversial artists.
When white privilege carries openly it opens up the window once closed because of minority open carry protests, there are courts and blatant double standard cases will eventually reach a judge more concerned for justice than their career path.

I’m with you on the general misconception of what a lot of Oregon is like. I’ve got a fair amount of relatives there, and when we visit, you can definitely tell that some places are, well, stuck a bit back in time. For example, my multiracial family made a gas stop in Prineville (population ~9k as of 2010), and went to the local diner for lunch. I’ve never been anywhere else in this country where everything literally stopped when I walked in the door. It was like those scenes in a movie where everyone stops talking, and the record skips (only in this case there was no jukebox playing). Nobody was talking. Everybody was staring. It was like they had never seen anyone with black hair and slanty eyes before. Everyone was polite and whatnot, but you could tell that the fact that there were asians in the diner was kind of a weird thing/big deal.

I often get the feeling that everyone thinks Portland=Oregon, and doesn’t realize how rural a lot of the state is. Kind of how people have difficulty reconciling that Austin is actually in Texas.

Really? Print porn still exists? Isn’t that what the internet is for?

Someone should tell newspapers what the secret is.

Well let’s make fun of Gresham – No, seriously, let’s make fun of Gresham; part of the reason “Cops” has been here for so many seasons, amirite?

Indeed. I was waiting for @k24k to opine on the Quinnspiracy as well. >.<

Oregon and Washington - the liberals are as liberal as you get, and the conservatives are as conservative as they come.

There’s a massive difference between Seattle/Portland and the states they’re in.

I have lived in PDX and around the state and pass for a WASP. Desert Oregon talks about people from the ‘valley’ and the Willamette valley talks about Portlanders. The rural population can be very closed living in their white Christian rural echo chamber but I have been surprised by the open mindedness as well. Prineville, I have always though that it looked like the town in Red Dawn.
changing topic…
I was just thinking about the story though, is this the surprising man-bites-dog exception that proves the general rule?

Yes? Okay, I’m worried about you. How long has it been since you’ve been outside?

And the secret is basically “Be porn.”

Why, How dare you! I went outside today. It was bright, and loud, and hrmm… somewhat unpleasant, but a man does what he needs to do to go get delicious Pho.

And I think that “secret” is not so secret. I’ve noticed a bit of a trend of news either becoming much more superficial, or dying out. I mean, how long can it be before we’ve got “page 3 girls” in the Wall Street Journal?

No, “dog-whistle” is when you nutballs talk about blah people. This is openly mocking the idea that on the whole, guns make people safer, as well as the critical capacity of those who believe it. People-whistle, as it were.

Haha, right. Not being crushed under the heel of the Queen. Are you from the 18th century?

err… the criminal is the one who -used- the gun.

Should we be praising him? I don’t get it.

Nope. The only effective anti-tyranny devices are earplugs and your feet.

your argument about not fitting in, yes, is invalid based on the 20 minutes you can document you’ve been around and might know how to fit in.

Unless of course your inflammatory and entirely rhetorical query about fitting in was earnest.

And do you know who else is a long time reader? My girlfriend, she is from Canada, you wouldn’t know her.

Especially true if it happens to still be the late 1800’s.

Or a Terminator movie.
“I like your gun. Give it to me, your clothes, and your motorcycle”

Or a similarly endowed chum who could approach the ‘collector’ from behind, uttering an appropriate remonstration. Provided the collector didn’t have a similarly witty, mobile, and armed, accomplice. Provided etc.

It’s firearms all the way down.

So, wait, your opinion is a little unclear. Are you being snarky? Or do you actually think that a person with a weapon in plain view is actually putting themselves in danger by not concealing?

I mean, I carry concealed. Not because I am afraid that a bigger dog on the block is going to challenge me if I show aggression. But rather, because I would prefer not to alarm law abiding citizens. No doubt there is some side benefit that it is also hidden from a would be perpetrator. I can think of several scenarios where I might be able to get the jump on a criminal if they didn’t know I had one and were in the process of committing a crime with their weapon.

Mind you, I am not surprised that this happened. However, I am always cautious about strangers and make sure I consistently position my body tactically in relation to others. Meaning, I will keep my distance, avoid having anyone to my back, avoid going out late at night, try to always have a buddy with me (my husband, usually). That being said, I’m not sure I would blame this guy for losing his gun just because it was open carry. In the heat of the moment, no matter how fast you think you might be at drawing your weapon, $4IT happens.
