(Really, the whole comment!)
[ETA - blurred the flashy image, as @Umm stated they have epilepsy]
I totally think its a problem:
Sometimes people with mental illnesses do things beyond their control. What if we had hard evidence that this man suffers from schizophrenia? Should the video be published on a site with 4 million monthly visitors?
Yep, that was me.
Can’t thank you enough for that one. It’s proven exceptionally useful this year.
Then stop trying to wave it away.
I can dig it.
I’m not diagnosing him. I think posting this video, assuming he doesn’t have a illness, when he clearly has odd behaviour might not be the right thing to do. Did you watch the whole video?
Do you have any concern or compassion for his victim? Are you worried about her safety, or if his attack affected her sense of well-being? What if he does (or has done) this to someone else in a less public place? Should potential victims be warned in advance to avoid getting too close to him?
Can you say anything that would indicate you recognize that there is an actual victim here?
Dude, whoever filmed the video is likely the same person responsible for putting it online, and I think that all your concern may be just a wee bit misplaced.
Treating the mentally ill as a freak show is also a problem. Equity over equality.
And other than sharing the video, has anyone called this man names, other than to point out his misogynistic behavior? Did anyone name call in this thread or call him a name that was disrespectful of the mentally ill?
Many of us are saying that assuming he is mentally ill because of his behavior unfairly stigmatizes those who actually are mentally ill.
I’m not sure, but if you see someone crawling up the stairs using only their arms, do you just assume it’s a choice? Could be that they have a disability. It could be he’s an asshole, but if you watch the whole thing, he’s struggling to keep it together over a burger. I just think when someone acts crazy, you should consider that they might actually be crazy. I also think humiliating the mentally ill is the worst thing you can do. Sometimes, people need compassion even when they seem like jerks.
Thanks for your reply.
You made it clear you are not OK with humiliating the mentally ill. I’m really sure most, if not all, people over here agree with you at that specific point.
If he has schizophrenia, it would literally be like posting a video of a seizure to show everyone on boingboing. He might not live in the same reality we do. Seriously, watch the whole video and tell me you think he’s grounded in reality. He’s absolutely not, he makes no logical sense.
Mysogyny should be called out. If this video were just showing a sexist asshole, that’s great to call him out. This guy can barely keep it together over a burger, if you watch the whole thing, he’s completely out of touch with reality. I’m saying, we don’t know he has the same abilities the rest of us have. He seems disabled to me.
Socially, does it not look like he’s “crawling up the stairs with his arms”?
Trying to reconcile BoingBoing mocking this guy while simultaneously hawking a vaping kit below the article.
Fine. Many of us have pointed out that we disagree and why we do so.
Noop, sorry. Somehow I really envy you for a positive friendly worldview. Wherein people acting like this must be mentally ill.
Because, otherwise, it can’t be possible somebody just acting like a not well behaving human being, going out of its pants for such a thing.
But it happens, you know? Often to.
We’re pointing out his misogyny…
And welcome to Boing Boing.
Thats one of a great, suitable gif!
