It’s the tried and true tactic of blaming and shaming the victim. Just watch what happens if the case ever actually comes to trial, the “defense” will aggressively attack the victim to try to pretend that it is reasonable (or at least less offensive) that the officer murdered him.

I honestly don’t think I’d have been able to take that phone call. I can barely stomach the sound of the guy’s voice in the best circumstances, I can’t imagine how hard it would be to keep it together while he blathered some blatantly disingenuous condolences in the midst of my family’s overwhelming grief.
