…
It used to be a very mainstream GOP opinion on Trump. Romney is merely an outlier in that he still says the things other Republicans were saying about Trump in 2016.
What a brave, brave man to speak truth to power like that, when he has so much to lose! If anyone knows about strength of character, it’s Mitt Romney!
Trump’s stranglehold on the GOP is pretty much complete, Mitt.
Form a third party or at least stop calling yourself Republican.
Mittens…
hm… as the media visibility of a small set of old-timey republicans (e.g. romney, liz-cheney, kinzinger…) increases, so does the probability that they’re contemplating, (with the aid of a helluva lot of huge corporate money which prefers a stable kleptocracy), of establishing the No-trump club reinvention of the republican party. (“the crooks you used to understand party”?) Which, might be a useful thing for the Democrats… for a while. still long odds, of course
Romney: “T**** lacks the character to to lead the United States be trusted with a pet goldfish.”
FTFY, Mittens.
That’s pretty common in the GOP. They all warn about how dangerous Trump is…right after they’ve decided to quit. The two exceptions I’m aware of are John Kasich, who has never waivered from his opposition to Trump since 2015, and Liz Cheney, who hasn’t waivered from her opposition since January 6, 2021. Of course, before that, she supported nearly everything Trump did. But…she didn’t switch course after deciding to quit, at least.
Yep. They are putting their own person welfare and safety ahead of the country.
No, she still ran to retain her seat and lost to a Trumpian candidate… but she did not quit and she’s still speaking out publicly against Trump, despite whatever threats she’s getting on the regular.
He ain’t a hero, but to be fair Romney did vote to impeach Trump twice. He was the only Republican in Congress to vote for the 2019 impeachment (which Cheney did not do even though she could have) and the first Senator to ever vote to impeach a President of his own party. And he didn’t announce his planned retirement until last year.
But Mitt still falls short of endorsing the alternative, even with all that.
He also tried to get a spot in Trump’s cabinet, so I’m not inclined to give him too much credit. He’s still a coward. Just not as much as some Republicans. Same goes for Cheney, who I did acknowledge supported Trump until Jan 6, 2021, so I’m well aware she didn’t support the first impeachment.
Sounds like somebody chewed their way out of the kennel strapped to the top of the clown car. I’m sure he’ll be back on the leash in no time.
Trump lacks both the character and the competence to lead a horse to water. However he is pretty good at making people drink (though the author of the old adage probably didn’t have high proof alcohol in mind.)
Trump: “Why doesn’t it feed itself and change its own water?! Why doesn’t it go back to the pet shop it came from?!”
Fine, but when you listed her as one of two “exceptions that you were aware of” my read was that you were giving her some kind of credit that you were not giving to Romney. My point is that if you’re going by history of supporting Trump she certainly doesn’t seem to have a better record than Romney. But we can agree that they were all cowards to ever give him any support in the first place.
Why wasn’t Mitt whipping the votes in the Senate to convict Trump in either of his impeachments?
That’s what I’m waiting for. Not holding my breath, mind…
Having a prominent gooper like him - the former presidential candidate of the party for f’s sake - say they are going to vote for Biden would open a permission structure for sooo many voters. We can only dream.
