There’s also the point that, judging by his public statements, whatever grudges Flynn may carry from the Cold War have been overwhelmed by his batshit crazy genocidal Islamophobia.
Ryan taking over would possibly mean 12 years under him. It’s like choosing between a poison that will kill you in an hour, and one that will kill you in a week.
I can’t speak for the “Cold Warriors” but I get the sense that many have put Russia in a different box than the Soviet Union of those days. The Cold War was against the Soviets, and we won. Since then, Russia has gone through several transitions, and they’re no longer the communist boogeyman they used to be. They are different now. Some (like the previous administration) probably recognize that they are a different threat, one perhaps equally as dangerous; ambition without ideology. Others (apparently this administration) view them with a sense of what I’m sure they would call realpolitik, a country that we could work work with as a partner in a war on terror that Russia has fought since Chechnya. Neither of those ideas are inherently wrong, just different perspectives with different hopes and expected outcomes. The real danger is in the motivation; is there personal gain or blackmail involved? If so, then we’re not just talking a difference of opinion, were talking treason.
Frankly, I think the Russian connection is a distraction from his real agenda, which is more focused on China. On day one, he killed TPP, basically ceding Pacific Rim trade policy to the Chinese. We don’t know where his financial ties really are, we’re assuming Russia, but he could have as much if not more exposure in China.
I found the early flap about Taiwan to be suspicious, and we’re seeing N. Korea escalating things (no doubt with China’s blessing). I think this is elaborate theater to sell out Taiwan, in exchange for peace on the Korean Peninsula. But most importantly, China will be calling the shots for trade, and probably investing quite a lot in Mexican businesses if the “wall” goes up.
It’s true, though. Without TPP, Thailand, the Philippines, even Australia will pivot more to China. Like Brexit, we’ll no longer have a seat at the table.
The problem with these accusations, like the infamous 19%, are that they’re very hard to prove. On the other hand, after Flynn’s Russian connection came out on tapes, there’s literally nothing beyond the realm of the credible when it comes to Trump’s dealings.
It would be really shocking if true. I thought Trump was just another Berlusconi, but Silvio never sold out his whole country for a stupid trademark. There is corruption and there is corruption.
It seems daft to me that we’re reliant on the GOP deciding to impeach when they’re good and ready. Even the appearance of the conflicts of interest like this should be enough if they had any interest in the good governance of the country.
Just got to keep uncovering and reporting these stories until his approval rating is so low they have to do something.
