NBA pulls 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte over North Carolina's transgender bathroom law

Perhaps. Wait 'til you see who gets elected in November.

I think the NBA’s decision is what tbe right-wing would describe as “PC.” They don’t like them no PC.

Where/wherefore on Earth does this originate?

Great news!

This movement is total bullshit, and needs to be flushed.

  • and also:

I learned that sex is the biological binary that mammals are generally born into.

Gender is about identity, no?

Words in some European languages have a gender (assignment, association, identity) but no sex.

Won’t someone think of the children? Just imagine men using this law to go into women’s bathrooms and attacking little girls. Of course, you’ll have to imagine it, since it’s never actually happened. But, you know, children and stuff. Oh, and Benghazi too! And voter fraud! Be afraid!!!

[sarcasm] But then where do little vocabulary words come from? [/ sarcasm]

You actually want to know the reasons?

The fact that you were able to write it down even in jest makes me worry for you.

“The NBA NC Values Coalition should be ashamed of itself for using North Carolina—particularly its young girls—as a political pawn for an out-of-touch agenda that compromises both dignity interests and privacy rights,”

Makes a lot more sense that way.

No, but bringing in “will nobody think of the children” is a general sign that your argument is complete crap.

Would any of them get into a North Carolina bathroom?

Word genders often have more to do with things like suffixes than biology, which is a kind of proxy for the reality of our own gender roles.

I was taught that both “cart” and “ship” are feminine in Latin, which is why we call cars “she” to this very day. I am glad Jiffy Lube doesn’t have gendered bays. They are so progressive.

Goes back beyond Latin to Indo-European.
Perhaps it’s worth noting that both the Greeks and the Persians had quite complex and fluid gender identities, though some of this was bound up with the status of women and slaves in their societies. In “progressive” Athens the public bathroom issue didn’t arise because women with any pretensions to social status rarely went out of doors - odd for a city whose tutelary deity was grey-eyed Athena. But other Greek societies have even left traces of matriarchy, such as the legends of the Amazons and of Artemis.
What Republicans need is not so much daylight as better education about the world outside the US.

Because there are no trans kids, I guess? And if there were, their being assaulted is a good thing?
