I figured it was implied…
I have that 2-volume set, but never finished the first book. So difficult to get through. Apparently he also wrote one for the period after the war, 1945-1959, called “The Lesser Evil”.
This is either the worst time to sit down and read all the way through, or the most appropriate. Probably both.
wow that does look like a book for our times.
And ironically the kindle version costs more than the paperback?
It’s actually really dense writing, so I can imagine it’s easier to read on a screen with zoomable font size.
i downloaded a sample. Wow. Will be reading this one.
No, that’s flat out false. Such persons certainly do make such statements, but they are not really the only ones.
Turning that around, one group of people who will reliably object to any recognition (or even mention) of non-Jewish Semitic peoples is racist Zionists.
BUT - know thine enemy… it’s best not to pre-judge or miscategorize based on stereotypes.
I believe you support the current government of Israel, which I certainly do not, but I’ll respect our differences and always treat you fairly. To date, you have done the same for me, and I don’t think you are a necessarily a racist just because you are a Zionist. And I don’t believe @jlw is a racist Zionist. (And I don’t believe that @wanderfound would ever discount victims of racist attacks.)
Thank you to all the folks contributing Klemperer information! I didn’t know any of that, and I watched all of HH as a kid.
In nearly complete agreement. The problem is, the people who usually make this argument, “Arabs are Semites too!” usually follow this progression:
“Arabs are Semites too!”
“Jews are not actually Semites.”
“Jews are descended from Khazers”
“Antisemitism isn’t real, or only means anti-Arab bias”.
“Like what Israel, populated by those fake-Semite Jews, are doing to the Palestinians, who are real Semites!”
So, yeah, we’re really touchy about people trying to redefine the term “antisemitism”, which, I will point out, was coined specifically to replace the old German phrase judenhass with something that was supposed to sound more “scientific” back during the 1800s.
Oh, and, btw, I am Semitic. My skin color might be pale, but I have both the genetic markers and the phenotype that shows Leventine Semitic ancestry. So trying to assert that “Many, many Jews are not Semitic”, aside from the converts, is an antisemitic canard, and I’m disappointed in you for stating it.
Is it weird that I heard of Otto Klemperer before I heard of Werner Klemperer?
Never mind, I can probably guess the answer to that.
The rest of your statement was dead-on accurate, and I wholeheartedly agree that we need better terminology for the BS currently going on. But, while I do honestly apologize for the brusqueness of my statement, I have a personal and vested interest in challenging those statements when I see them, especially when the source is someone that I respect.

The whole “arabs are semites too” thing goes to “antisemitism isn’t just about Jews”, which making me think of people who point out that the nazis were “socialists” because they were the “Nationalsozialistische” party. Might as well say that North Korea is Democratic because it’s right there in the name: Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The term antisemitism was coined to mean prejudice against, hatred towards, or opposition to people of Jewish faith or heritage. Whether there is another term “semitic” that has it’s own meaning, that includes some people of Jewish faith or heritage (and not others), is a totally unrelated distraction from the fact that for some goddamned reason people hate Jews.
