At least someone is taking this seriously… one wonders how soon other states with GQP dominated legislatures and governors will roll this kind of thing out. They’ve been looking to return academia to the realm of white privilege for a long time now, and between shit like this and the inability of so many to afford college now without going deep into debt, they are getting their wish.
You should also send a letter to whatever the key professional orgs are in your academic field, as they should also be putting public pressure on to head this off at the pass.
Hard one. It would be a thing of beauty for everyone to identify as a member of the Pastafarian party. But then they would take away funding for the pasta strainers and one can only eat so much noodle soup.
Ah, yet another gangrene upon the body politic.
ETA:
The difference between Cancer & Gangrene is, the former can usually be treated, non-catastrophically…
As if he needs any.
Cultists don’t acknowledge mere facts. Nor do charlatans.
Can you even imagine if this was any Democrat or left leaning politico that was passing legislation that college students and staff political views must be recorded and reported to the state?
There’d be all sorts of crazy conspiracy theories about people being rounded up for death camps etc… and that everybody better arm up and storm the capital to “save the children”…
Uh, why is anyone worried about this?? It is obviously both completely unenforceable and unconstitutional. Just refuse to fill it out. Government can’t force speech.
I had a similar thought: everyone claim to be right wing and watch the dollars flow in to recruit leftist faculty and students.
But I think this would turn out more like the free speech stuff:
Can’t bring a prominent lefty in because it upsets the conservatives, but can’t turn down a fringe right-winger, because academic freedom.
No, that’s freedom of religion. (Will be what they say)
Also, if Ron decides to run for president and Donald wants to run also, Ron is not getting the nod.
DeSantis wants to know students’ political beliefs, so why can’t colleges ask how enthusiastically those students believe (materially) in the Second Amendment? Since a pistol isn’t as enthusiastic a support of the Second as say a rifle, that’s information DeSantis must want colleges to collect too.
Again, this is about ensuring that there is a means of tracking people on the left. While this is aimed at students, they can incorporate this survey into how they accept students and put the conservatives to work pushing back against anything they deem to be “too left” from the faculty.
This is an attempt to curtail free speech on college campuses by stacking the student body with right wingers who are willing to be the brown shirts who will push out the liberals and commies. We keep ignoring this shit at our peril. This kind of direct attack on academic freedom has been building for a very long time and it’s very depressing that so many people find this to be a joke. This is where this kind of shit starts - focusing attention of those who work in the world of ideas. By the time they are firing leftists from their academic positions, it will be too late. Maybe it already is, I don’t know…
