New law requires Florida universities to survey students about their political views to promote "intellectual diversity"

The evil geniuses that we see in movies are exceedingly rare in real life.

The story probably inspired the MAD Non-Slanderous Political Smear Speech.

There is no “War on Christmas”, there is no “War on Christians”, but Conservatives are waging a full-on, no holds barred, War On Objective Reality. Forced “Intellectual Diversity” means that they want their delusions to be taught as if they were reality, you know “Good people, on BOTH SIDES!”, when the other side are UNAPOLOGETIC NAZIS.

The law is only a stepping stone, only intended to be selectively enforced against those institutions, faculty members, or students which the committee “suspects” is not in compliance. When, for example, a history professor is accused of discussing slavery as a primary cause of the civil war, or a political science professor is recorded discussing conservative politicians who were caught up in corruption scandals, or students are caught distributing flyers for democratic candidates, the committee will come down on them like a ton of bricks.

Right? Here in the states, I’m a member of the American Historical association (AHA) and they keep writing letters and writing op-eds, but departments keep closing or merging. I’m not sure their activism is having much of an impact on lawmakers either… Not that petitions can’t help, but if that’s all they’re doing… :woman_shrugging:

Um no. That’s not how this works. They’ll just get expelled for organizing leftist events.

People keep thinking this is no big deal, but it is a big deal. This is the culmination of decades of sustained attacks on academic freedom.

Yes.

Yes, and with regards to universities, they have been for years.

Turns out that one might have been handy for all the wrong reasons. Who knew?

The problem here is that when they find that four years of thinking, reading, writing and living in a larger world changes peoples opinions, they will try to stop this process we call “education”.

As they have been for decades.
As @anon61221983 has said many times in this thread, and needs to say many more, there is a real effort to undermine higher education in the United States, and it feels like we may be very close, or past, the tipping point.

I am really worried that the pandemic will be one very big excuse to finally get rid of all the non-practical/wishy-washy courses, such as history, literature, anything with “studies” in the name, any “social” science, etc, etc, etc. and the commie complainers who teach or, especially, research in those areas.

The vast majority of history classes are likely alredy being taught by either grad students or by underpaid over worked part timers with no job security. So this process is already well underway.

This one no longer looks so innocent:

He has declared himself in favor of more homogeneity on college campuses

Am I correct, then, in reading this as “homogeneously conservative, white, male, cis, het and wealthy?” Because I am pretty sure I am

Thank you for your willingness to stick your head above the parapet, in whatever capacity and for however long.*

I sure hope you have tenure.
And if you don’t, my thanks all the more for taking this on.

Really hoping that a buncha Florida faculty members from a buncha universities can get together and challenge this new law in court. Given the efficiency by which various parts of our justice system operates, that may take a while and in the interim, it’s gonna really suck to be tap-dancing on these ultra-red-white-and-blue eggshells.

Assuming, and I am saying this with zero sarcasm, that we are still a nation of laws. Yeah, it really is happening alright.

My uncle was a prof for decades at UF–Gainesville. I was impressed at how he managed to hang on to his (self-identified!) Yellow Dog Democrat status, esp. as an off-the-boat Chinese guy with a similarly OTB Chinese wife and fam.

ETA: grammar

Talk about invasion of privacy. This is more of the GOP intrusion on individuals’ civil rights. There’s not an honest person in the whole party.

To be fair, they only remembered to send the form in my 3rd year there and never complained (noticed?) when it went directly into the circular file.
