"Officer, you don’t want to do that.” — Idaho mom arrested for COVID-19 'Playdate Protest'

Thank you for that insightful, erudite response.

That’s the thing – these people seriously believe that they are being oppressed and that they are the new Rosa Parks or something. They’re wrong of course, but I think their sense of being genuine protestors is true in their own minds (even if it is being manipulated behind the scenes by the Kochs, etc.).

The these folks will flip the term “Karen” into a badge of honor. It will be the 2020 version of “Basket of deplorables”.

It’s almost like certain people of a certain caste who look a certain way receive different, even preferential treatment from authorities in the US of A.

Yes, this woman is a regular Rosa Parks!!! /s  Oh, wait, she’s not. She’s a selfish person who doesn’t care if others get ill because of HER actions… She’s like… the OPPOSITE of Rosa Parks, in fact.

Nevertheless there she is – hoping to get arrested, because if she hadn’t been then the “party” would have been for nothing. Altruism or not does not enter into the matter.

I wouldn’t know; I’ve never had an entire society built around facilitating and catering to my wants and needs, above all else…

It does matter. This woman is not trying to save anyone. she’s trying to martyr herself for her right to make others ill. Her actions could hurt others.

White people need to stop acting like getting arrested for doing a shitty thing makes them Rosa Parks. It does not.

It is right the fuck up there… this woman isn’t oppressed at all. :woman_shrugging:

[ETA] Okay, yes patriarchy… but she’s using her standing as a white woman to martyr herself for a cause that causes great harm to others in our society. This is straight up using her whiteness to hurt others.

Parents who brought kids to playground for staged event were told to move on before arrest for breaking public health order

Meanwhile they choke black men to death for selling cigarettes in NYC

I don’t wish violence on anyone, but I wish we would apply the same calm de-escalation techniques I see used in the suburbs in the cities.

I visited London once and I really enjoyed speaking with an officer about how they view policing:

as someone who has been subject to violence during protest when if I’d been given a lawful order I’d have obeyed it, fuck her.

(Also fuck her since “I want to infect people” is not a valid protest topic)

In terms of getting attention it does not make a difference, perhaps I did not make myself clear, it would not surprise me to learn that she or one of her idiot pals was the one who made the complaint to police and arranged for herself to be filmed while baiting the police into arresting her. I have not in anyway compared her to Rosa Parks or any other non-violent protestor or commented on the colour of her skin.

So you did not directly name check sister Parks, no. However, the reasons why most modern Americans are aware of these tactics is because of the black freedom movement in the postwar period. The non-violent protest was advocated primarily by Bayard Rustin, who came from the Quaker tradition. He (and other quakers) incorporated Gandhi’s non-violence into the Quaker pacifist mindset, which was then combined with the legal strategy of the NAACP in the late 50s. The SCLC and King were primarily responsible for using that particular strategy to garner greater white liberal support. Right wingers since the 70s have been using these tactics to advocate for oppression for others (such as pro-life groups). Intent DOES matter here, when using sympathetic tactics that are largely considered legitimate, because it’s a tactic employed to specifically legitimize the CAUSE, whatever it maybe.

[ETA for clarity and grammar dumbness]

Since I am not an American and am aware of non-violent protest through other sources I would suggest that your reaction to my comment is based on your conditioning and not mine. But I am grateful for the explanation and will take it on board.
