Ongoing coronavirus happenings

My point was around understanding specifically what it helps one visualize.

Isn’t log scale the appropriate one to use here? Asking for a friend who struggles just as much as I do with the proper display and parsing of statistical data.

And it’s not like they’re trying to downplay the fact either, considering how much they sacrificed aesthetically for the type size of their megadeath axis.

I agree, but I’m not familiar with what’s involved in this kind of rules change. The fact that she supports vote by mail but thinks this would be hard to get passed suggests that it is in fact hard to get passed.

Or maybe she just assumes that there will be more GOP members in quarantine than Democratic members, and sees a political advantage. Given the behavior of some Republican “leaders” it isn’t a bad assumption.

Yeah, we are starting to hear rumblings about this. “Guarding patient confidentiality” has become corporate speak for “don’t make management look bad.” This takes priority of patient care and especially over protection of HCW. Which in way too many places does not make the list at all.

I would facepalm if it was possible to do so without touching my face.

Yep it’s a great fir for rate of change, but everything looks to the uninitiated likes it’s tapering off.

I’ve had a message from an ICU here in the UK, and it’s carnage. Keep the hell away from this virus.

I think it would be useful to have a little more in the “legends” for some of these graphs, as far as explaining that log scale is for rate of change, and linear for visualizing quantity of change, for those not used to dealing with such data on a regular basis.

for this kind of event, linear graphs all look the same, they’re flat on the left side and nearly straight up on the right with a misleading “inflection point” five days before whenever they were plotted

I’ve been primarily leaning on rate of change, and log scale, as it is indicative of growth even with under reported data. My point was mainly to clear up why log scale was appropriate there, and that people need to understand what they are looking at, and an explainer along those lines, to be clear.

The whole “blame Obama” schtick May have worked his first few months in office but nearly 4 years later? You gotta start looking inward.

Judging from what has been communicated to me, the view may well be that this is so devastating that we just have to get through it and out the other side, then look back. I’m doing what I can to support our health services here (they didn’t even have protective equipment ffs, and three or four docs have now died - nothing of course on the poor Italian medics).

Oh fuck.

According to tagesschau.de (web presence of the trustworthy 20h news on the primary public German broadcaster, ARD), they already have 100 cases on board and cannot leave the ship.

Virus on board a US aircraft carrier
8:38 pm
The corona virus continues to spread under the crew of the US aircraft carrier “USS Theodore Roosevelt”. The armed forces were investigating an evacuation of the ship, but the situation was “one-off”, said Navy Minister Thomas Modly. An armored and nuclear-powered ship cannot simply be completely evacuated. In addition, there is not enough capacity on the Pacific island of Guam, where the aircraft carrier is currently anchored, to accommodate the more than 4,000 crew members. According to media reports, there have been at least 100 confirmed infections on board the ship.

What horror.

JFC. How in fuck’s name did the poor sods manage to get it on board?

Every hotel in Las Vegas is empty right now. Forcing people to sleep on the ground in a parking lot is just inhumane.

Long incubation period. Asymptomatic carriers. Lots of possibilities really. It is probably more a case of “just discovering” it on board.

the argument would be, at least nobody’s bothering them in a designated safe space

it’s better than sleeping on the sidewalk where cops and random fuckheads would be hassling them

and a place to put their stuff so they don’t have to carry it all around 24/7 is pretty valuable as well

in the larger context, of course, you are correct
