Ongoing Trump raids

And given he’s apparently refusing to share campaign funds or support other candidates he’s very much just extracting campaign funds from the GOP fundraising system.

Every dollar sent to Trump is a dollar not spent on the midterms.

I was focusing on the “not” and missed the “in” in “inconceivable”.

In a recent video, Beau suggested that had Trump just kept his mouth shut when the FBI searched his home and not made a big deal of it, he wouldn’t be in the mess he’s in due to them wanting to protect the institution of the Presidency. Do you think that’s true?

Seth Abramson does know who we’re talking about, right?

that-word

It will be a travesty of justice and a terrible sign of how far we’ve fallen if Trump isn’t indicted, but it’s hardly “inconceivable” given how many times he’s dodged all accountability for his actions.

Whenever you start discussing hypotheticals that start with “what if Trump had just done the smart, sensible thing in this situation” you may as well be asking about what if an entirely different person had been the President.

It’s a stronger statement than that. “Not inconceivable” is a litotes: it just means “conceivable”. So in formalish logic, if we were to say possible(X) means “X is conceivable”, then this statement maps to
!!possible(X) = possible(X).

But that’s not what he said: he said “inconceivable that [he] not”. That is, that the contrary position to X is impossible. !possible(!X), which maps not to “X is possible”, but to “X is certain”.

But I guess my real question is, would the DOJ have let it slide?

We don’t know if the Mar-a-Lago show is the full case against Trump.

All the documents so far only talk about Mar-a-Lago, but that’s all that they have to. If there is more, there won’t be a whisper until later.

there you go, getting my hopes up.

My hopes are that someone was dumb enough to make a copy on a standard photocopier. That would preserve the unique watermarking tracing it back to Trump’s copy, verifiable from the White House document security logs, and finally from the physical document that they took into custody, preserving the chain of evidence.

It’d make a nice Columbo-style reveal.

True, but I was trying to show a quick way to reconfigure the sentence to make the double negative appear more obvious. I didn’t realize the issue was that the poster had missed the “in-'” prefix.

I’d just like to point out that the use in this thread of gifs from Columbo and The Princess Bride has a pleasing point of continuity in Peter Falk

… maybe if “not making a big deal of it” included not sorting through stuff in advance and hiding some of it from the FBI

“You see sir, we knew it was you, even before we searched. When a photocopy of one of the documents turned up in country Z, the watermarks lead straight to your printout, just like with Reality Winner. We weren’t really looking, you see, we were just taking it into custody as evidence. But thanks for admitting all that other stuff, that makes our job easier.”
