The author of the impeachment articles bill says she’s ready to put them on the floor NOW. There is literally no reason for any kind of delay.
‘Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski said this afternoon that Donald Trump should resign the presidency immediately and that if the Republican party cannot separate itself from Trump, she isn’t certain she has a future with the party.’
Don’t hold your breath. (This has been a public health notice)
that’s a good one!
They meant he cannot run for office again.
After thinking about this a bit more, there is one reason to proceed. The house can bring it to the Senate and vote to stop him from ever taking office again once they have the majority. There might be a few republicans who want to run in 2024 that might be brave enough to vote for that.
“Moving at the speed of government” as they say. If they can act as early as next week, that’s pretty fucking remarkable.
Yes. And who is going to stop him? What happens if he starts a new PAC and buys tv and web ads and tells everyone to vote for him?
That’s running for office.
Nobody’s going to stop him.
What’s anyone going to do? Tell him to stop? Has that ever once worked in his entire life? It certainly has never stopped him from raping. Why would telling him to stop make any difference?
If there is anything the last four years have taught us definitively, it’s that nobody will fucking ever do anything that matters to stop trump from doing anything he wants to do.
Many backers are probably to freaked to fund him any longer.
There is always dark money but I think that he has scared off many after yesterday’s coup attempt.
Um…
You DO realize this orange muthafucka is not the freakin’ Juggernaut, right?
He’s not fucking ‘unstoppable’; he’s an unhealthy, overweight elderly man who’s had Covid… and the only reason he ever amassed as much power as he did is because other wealthy White assholes in power enabled him.
I still say he’s not going to live to see 2024; enough pressure will burst a pipe.
He can try to run all he wants, but his name cannot legally appear on ballots, nor can any write-in votes for him be considered valid. If he is impeached and barred from office, there is no mechanism he can use to cheat his way back in.
I will believe that trump will see consequences only after I see him arrested and put in cuffs.
Until then, the last 70 odd year long trunpian track record shows us that anyone with the power to punish trump: won’t.
He’s not a juggernaut. He just doesn’t suffer consequences.
Do you, but please don’t spend all your time here predicting the worst as if you’re actively hoping for it; we already have more than enough defeatist Schleprocks on this site to last us until the next millennium.
As Nix says, it’s like some people want to sink:
Reminds me of a joke from Frasier, where he is sick and wants to go into work anyway.
Martin: Frasier, you’re not going anywhere.
Frasier: Oh, who’s going to stop me?
Martin: I am.
Frasier: Oh, how are you - a man with a limp and a cane - going to stop a man in the prime of his life?
Martin pokes Frasier in the chest, and the latter falls pathetically back onto the bed, groaning loudly.
Martin: And I wasn’t even leaning on my cane.
Trump got where he is entirely because people let him. Because the country has spent more than a century indulging its rich and its white supremacists on the very specious grounds that to oppose them could somehow only make things worse. You need only look at his pathetic scrambling now to know that when people actually deign to stop him from something, he does not have any experience in how to deal with it.
Once the guy is no longer POTUS, they should simply lock up his ass for up to 20 years for participating in “seditious conspiracy” as per 18 USC § 2384:
If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to […] by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, […] they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.
They can only call an emergency session to hear impeachment by unanimous consent, and they don’t have the votes (remember the 100+ republicans who voted to throw out AZ votes this week?) in the House. So, they wait until they go back in session Monday. As it is, they are taking a huge shortcut by not going through the House Judiciary Committee and drafting articles directly.
It remains to be seen what Mitch will do if they do impeach – I assume Schumer has counted enough GOP votes to convict, but it might not matter. As a strategy, it forces people to stand up and be counted. So, we get to see who is too afraid of Trump’s base. Ironically, Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley would benefit greatly if trump were removed with disqualification, as that MAGA base they so crave isn’t going to vote for anyone not named Trump anyway, and there’s a pretty good chance that wing of the party will fizzle out by 2024 once Trump loses some visibility and relevance.
Too bad Pelosi didn’t cite the 14th Amendment & refuse to seat those GOPers that refused to accept the results of the election. Those people are going to be trouble.
In any case, impeach the bastid again.
As others have mentioned, it puts 'em all on record as to where their loyalties lie, especially in the Senate if they don’t vote to convict. I doubt those numbers would change much.
As it is, not only do we have a ‘POTUS’ that needs to be removed ASAP, there are lots of Congresscritters that need to join him.
the “raising campaign funds” part is probably more important, it’s can he keep grifting or not
George Conway thinks there are 67 votes to convict, fwiw
This impeachment is more consequential than ever. Hitler kept coming back until he was able to seize power. This one needs to be kept out of office after this or the problem gets worse.
