PETA billboard protests Renaissance faire's favorite fare

Whew. I was going to say “where are all the peg leg turkeys!”
Glad someone is on point.

PETA has the worst marketing ever, they really need to fire everyone and start fresh with sharper minds

They should be using moments with animals who are obviously thinking and feeling, something most people don’t even consider, make people go “hmm” and make them make a choice, they wouldn’t even dare consider eating the family dog or cat

remember that video of the cows romping and playing with a big ball on a farm? you know the videos of dairy cows loving their back rubs from that rotating brushing machine? PETA needs to show those 24/7 as commercials on all the major networks and the internet, I guess like facebook

would you eat your dog? would you eat this?

“Corn” was always there. It was “Maize”" that was new.

Yeah, I’ve got 20+ wild turkeys filing through my hay field right now that would give your comment the side-eye.

Given that PETA appear to be trying their hardest to look like a cartoonishly evil and wrongheaded animal wrongs group, I wouldn’t say that it would be unreasonable to find out that they are being funded by their supposed opponents, to make their cause look bad. However, it’s usually a mistake to attribute conspiracy to something that could be explained readily enough by stupidity, so it is more probable that they are just that dumb, or that they’re engaging in philosophical driving trollies (see also Peter Singer).

PETA does a lot of things that makes the public way less sympathetic. Then you’ve also got the individuals that don’t make it any easier.

I think the PETA ads that are actually most likely to change minds are the ones that don’t assume the viewer has an equal regard for all animal life or try to convince them they should. My family has had different kinds of pets, but I’ve never been as bothered by the death of a hermit crab or a chicken as I have been by the loss of a beloved dog.

Instead, PETA could try focusing more on the health benefits of eating less meat or maybe the environmental impact of meat production. (I know some of their ads do touch on these topics but they’re not the ones that get them all that free press).

She’s trying to force Australians to stop barbecuing? Yikes.

Rumor has it she is also trying to change the definition of a knife

Mouse in house? Feed to snake. Problem solved.

We wild turkeys don’t often get confused for the bred-in-a-box kind. We are far more attractive, and free of spirit. Maybe 98% of those guys are bred for meat, but we manage our own affairs.

Good figuring! I guess IIX could be considered an “8”. I was too busy doing math in Roman numerals, and still didn’t figure it out!

I only mentioned it because I was confused and looked to see if there was a Henry 12th anywhere. There is, but I doubt 12th century Bavaria knew turkeys existed.

Well, dog is basically illegal where I live. Doubtless for cultural reasons, but it was never a traditional meat animal in these parts.

Pigeon I had during my childhood. Neighbors raised messenger pigeons and ate them sometimes. Today they have a bad reputation as people associate them with flying rats. Which admittedly most of the wild pigeons in urban areas are. Anyway, pigeon meat is hard to get, much harder than quail or ostrich.

Horse isn’t a problem. While not super common there still seem to be enough horse butchers around. But yeah, there’s an emotional issue for many.
Sport and work horses get all kind of medication which make them unsuitable for human consumption. No large herds of wild horses in Germany either. But they are actually effective meat animals, with some benefits compared to beef. Thanks for the reminder, l’ll see if I can get some here.

Edit: easy. Every Thursday on a weekly market. Appropriately on the one taking place at the “horse market” market square.

Well, that would be obligate carnivores, which is mostly cats and, arguably, polar bears. Every other non-herbivorous land mammal is on a sliding scale from facultative carnivore to omnivore.

No. The prefix notation was a late invention and had been standardized as using only one prefix char denoting subtraction, and only one of I, X, C, preceding the two next higher signs.

So IV, IX, XL, XC, but not IC. And no IIX either. That would be the same as XII.

RenFaires could offer vegan alternatives to make PETA happy. That worked for Disney.

Maybe PETA should just post a sign reading

TURKEYS ARE A NEW-WORLD BIRD AND THUS NOT PERIOD-APPROPRIATE FOR A RENAISSANCE FAIRE ANY COSPLAY THEMED PRIOR TO 1524.

(Edited for historical sticklers)

I demand Cornish hens and pigs on a spit!

(Though technically, they could have imported turkeys in the 1500s… not sure when that started.)
